Prednisolone 10mg does weight gain

Hi,

My doctor has just prescribed me prednisolone to take when I get bitten as I have bad allergic reactions. It's a 10mg dose to be taken once a day for 4 days when I have a reaction, so I would guess a few times a year.

Any idea if this is likely to cause weight gain? I read the side effects after he'd prescribed it.

I highly doubt it. It’s usually only when you take higher dose courses (ie 30-60mg) over longer periods - weeks/ months - that you’d have possible weight gain as a side effect, and even then you’d just have to be aware of increased appetite and not over eat as much as possible.

(I am on life long steroids for various autoimmune conditions).

Another on life long steroids which are a double edged sword.

Prednisolone does not in itself cause weight gain but it can cause increase in appetite. They may also make you feel generally better and have more energy.

I have taken it at varying doses 5 to 10mg continuously for the last 2 years and not gained weight. The higher the dose the more appetite increases. I have had dexamethosone, a stonger steroid and that made me constantly hungry.
