Heart palpitations after surgery

I had surgery on my nose 1 week ago. I’ve been suffering with heart palpitations since on and off. The GP said that she doesn’t have the equipment to check my heart so I have to go to A&E. I’ve been recovering from surgery and didn’t feel well enough to sit in A&E for 5 hours so haven’t gone. I thought they had stopped but they are back again and I feel a bit breathless. Im only 30 and as far as im aware no prior heart problems. I had an ECG and blood tests before surgery and they were normal. I know by the time I get to A&E and wait hours the palpitations will have stopped. Should I still go? And in the meantime does anyone know what could be causing this? I had a general anaesthetic 1 month before and I didn’t suffer any side effects after, but this time I have. I thought I might have had a reaction to the antibiotics they gave me, so I stopped taking them 1 day ago but if im still having palpitations maybe it had nothing to do with the tablets. When I woke up from surgery the doctors said my heart rate was high, same again in the ward after. I assumed I was fit for discharge seeing as they sent me home. Has anyone suffered with this? Thanks

I’ve gone to hospital and I am waiting to be seen, going to be here a while as it’s busy. Curious if anyone else has had these symptoms after any surgery?

Almost 5 weeks after my op and I’m still having the palpitations but they are milder. My 24 hour ecg has been booked for the end of January and my bloods are normal. I couldn’t sleep all night because I had chest pain. I’m so confused and annoyed actually. I have to return to work tomorrow to a job that is quite active and I'm really not feeling myself. I’ve never suffered with any issues like this. Has anyone else experienced this?

Hi @Sweetcandles12 I know this post is quite old but what was the outcome of your palpatations? I am experiencing similar.

Hi 👋 they just stopped eventually. Not had them since. It was definitely the surgery that caused it but I’ll never know why. I had some time off work as well as the time off for surgery and recovering.

If you had nasal surgery , they may have used cocaine to cauterise your nose , it can cause your heart to race ! I woke from nasal surgery 25 years ago feeling the same .. it could be the after effects took a while to disappear

what rubbish

@Sweetcandles12 oh ok, interesting! How long did it take to go, do you remember? I thought mine had gone but they have come back but milder. Also did they start straight after surgery or a week or two after?

Sweetcandles12 · 07/04/2024 20:49

Started as soon as I woke up in the recovery bit, the nurse commented on it too. I actually can’t remember, I think was a few months. I stayed home not doing much as I had to get signed off and then they just stopped. It was so strange and can’t understand why it happened. As soon as I returned to work being active they started again but then eventually just stopped. Was horrible like tight chest feeling and fluttering in my chest, almost more like my heart was vibrating.
