Worried about starting Ramipril

I've been prescribed 2.5mg of Ramipril for high blood pressure but worried about side effects. I hate taking drugs. The idea of dizziness freaks me out, I'm prone to anxiety anyway. I'm not so worried about the dry cough. Has anyone started this drug and found it OK?

I’m on ramipril and have had no side effects

JudgeRindersMinder · 16/10/2021 12:22

No side effects here either

Giveronyoursausage · 16/10/2021 13:35

No side effects for me either.

UpsyDaisysarmpit · 16/10/2021 13:38

I had the cough, so they stopped it and put me on Amlodipine. My OH started it and had no issues whatsoever.
Just be vigilant and let them know if you are coughing. FWIW they took bloods for me to check it wasn't causing me a problem. For me it was affecting my kidney function so they stopped it.

I'm 68 and have taken Ramipril 10 mg a day for the last 5 years.
My blood pressure is well controlled and I've never had side effects.
Hope you have the same experience.

Best wishes. Mx. Flowers

I'm on a much higher dose of ramipril (as well as two other antihypertensives) and have never had any side-effects.

If you get a cough they'll switch you to candesartan anyway.

No side effects for me either. I actually have low blood pressure naturally but am prescribed Ramapril because my heart is severely damaged following viral myocarditis.

BlueBloodedBlue · 16/10/2021 18:17

No side effects for me either, been on it for about 7 years now.

BrilloPaddy · 16/10/2021 18:24

I've been on 2.5mg of this for about 10 years. Get the odd dry cough but certainly nothing else. In fact I really notice if I've missed my dose as I feel crap.

It gets a lot of bad press but it's suited me and keeps my BP under control.

My DH is on 5mg of ramipril. He does have dizziness from them but finds its easier if he takes them in the evenings or before bed. He never has a cough from taking them :)

Whenigrowupiwanttobea · 16/10/2021 18:25

The complications from high blood pressure will be more serious and life-changing than the side-effects of Ramipril. You won't know how those side-effects will affect you until you start taking them. Side-effects usually subside within a couple of weeks as your body adapts. If you are still struggling then you need to ask GP for a meds review and alternative prescription.

@Whenigrowupiwanttobea perfect answer - I wish there was a like button

To be fair if you have blood pressure sufficiently high to need medicating 2.5 mg of ramipril is probably not going to cause dizziness.

I take 10 mg. No side effects. Blood tests are good.
