One massive tonsil!

VirtualLife · 15/10/2021 16:26

What on earth causes a one sided infection? My right tonsil is massive, left perfectly normal. Glands on right side of neck swollen, sore to move my head, left side normal. Same with my nose, right nasal passage irritated and itchy, left normal Confused. I've had tonsillitis many times but always both at the same time.
Any ideas?

Quinsy? Abscess on one side

Luckytattie · 15/10/2021 16:28

Strep throat maybe

VirtualLife · 15/10/2021 16:29

I did read it could be an abscess but I can't see any pus. It's just red and swollen (and painful!). Chances of seeing a gp anytime soon - nil.

Oh god I hope its not strep. Had the pleasure of that previously too. Just never only had one side affected!

My brother just had strep throat and was only on one side. He got antibiotics after send a photo to the GP.

I once had a chest infection just on one side with one set of swollen glands. I think it's just a thing that can happen.

Does sound like Quinsy. Is there an out of ours GP you could see or a walk in centre near you? Quinsy can be dangerous, and bacterial tonsillitis can also lead to sepsis, I would definitely get it checked any way you can.

VirtualLife · 15/10/2021 17:11

Thanks everyone. So I had a look with a torch and there's definitely pus now. Called for a phone appointment and the GP called back 5 minutes later! Said I had 3 out of 4 markers for a bacterial infection (no temperature) and prescribed antibiotics which I've to pick up in an hour! I have to eat my words now as that was pretty exceptional service.
It was the one sided thing that threw me but obviously not that unusual.

That sounds exactly like what my bro had.

Hope it clears quickly for you.
I have also been prescribed antibiotics very quickly recently. I wonder if they are more relaxed about it now as they aren't seeing so many people in person and just want us to be dealt with somehow

Sometimes you don't get a temperature when the infection is very localised. One of my DC often has infections which only effect the area not the whole body. So one sided tonsillitis, or in ear infection in one part of the ear only, usually with glands up only around that side of the face. It is so weird!

I'm glad they have treated you well and got you the antibiotics I hope you feel better soon
