Coeliac and sweets

Hoping for some guidance as I have no experience with Coeliac. I am making up halloween sweet cones for the kids in the neighbourhood. One of the kids (6) is celiac. Does anyone have any suggestions on what sweets I could put in their sweet cone? I think haribo is a safe one. From what I have read marshmallows are not. I would be very grateful for any advice as I definitely do not want to get this wrong! I do know when her Mum sends her to our house she sends her with popcorn, are there certain popcorns that are Coeliac safe? Thanks in advance

Most popcorn is safe but you do have to check. Yes to haribo, yes to most marshmallows, m&ms choc are safe kinder choc is safe- but do check every label in case it's a 'may contain' which isnt safe for coeliacs. So you're looking for wheat gluten, barley, oats, rye and spelt when checking anything for a coeliac.

You're better sticking with fruity sweets. I've not found safe mini choc bars as they all come with the 'may contain'. The exception is the mini choc bars from Aldi.

Haribo
Fruitella
Jelly beans
Sour patch
Marshmallows are OK
Lollies

Avoid flavoured liqouice and fizzy sweets. Double check anything foamy or with crispy bits.

Just check the ingredients I guess! I echo others - things like skittles etc are fine but lots of chocolates have barley in. I don’t eat anything that “may contain” gluten either.

FluffyTeddyBear · 04/10/2021 19:02

Just check the ingredients and contamination warnings. I can’t eat gluten but there are loads of options, although I prefer chocolate to sweets.

Thanks everyone for the ideas. I am afraid of missing something in the ingredients and I don't have the time to give myself a full education on it. I also don't trust myself not to miss something, with the different wording etc that can be used.

@milkcereal thank you for that list of what to look for, I will take the safe list and make sure to check them all for that. What is good is that they are sweets all the kids can have so that they are all getting the same and she is not singled out.

It will have gluten containing ingredients highlighted on the packet.

PiffleWiffleWoozle · 04/10/2021 19:44

That’s so thoughtful. Maybe just doublecheck with the parents once you have decided?

careerchangeperhaps · 04/10/2021 19:45

Stick with Haribo. All the kids will like those and they're safe for coeliacs/ dairy free / nut free etc. They do some that are gelatine free too if you are likely to be visited by vegetarians or Muslims etc.

dementedpixie · 04/10/2021 19:45

Those wee millions sweets are good for sweetie cones

Buttercup72 · 04/10/2021 19:47

Most galaxy products are gluten free, as are crunchies.

pastabest · 04/10/2021 19:49

It's probably easier to list the main ones that definitely aren't safe.

Like smarties, malteasers and Mars bars for example.

SpindleWhirl · 04/10/2021 19:49

Asda sell Innocent sweets that are definitely ok, and also Extra Special fudge that is ok, and which both taste great.

Cost a few bob, though not crazy, but nice for a special treat.

B1rdinthebush · 04/10/2021 19:56

@Buttercup72 Some seem to have changed lately, Galaxy Caramel and Minstrels are now a may contain. Thankfully I don't eat dairy anymore or this would have broken my heart 😂

dementedpixie · 04/10/2021 19:57

Skittles and starburst be ok too

dementedpixie · 04/10/2021 19:57

Should be*

B1rdinthebush · 04/10/2021 19:58

@Merriwicks Here's a list of gluten free sweets and chocolate, by supermarket. Maybe just pick a few from here?

I’m gutted about the minstrels!

FluffyTeddyBear · 08/10/2021 21:04

@Buttercup72 minstrels are gluten free.

FluffyTeddyBear · 08/10/2021 21:04

Oh! Just scrolled up. Shizzle.
