Pitchounette, how stressful to have that hanging over you over Christmas. DS didn't put on any wait for two months and was referred to GP to look for underlying cause and that was bad enough.
All I can hope is that its a phase he's going through and wish you good luck

alirobins · 06/12/2007 21:50

How old is ds and how much does he weigh?

Ds is under paed at hospital for breathing problems and gets wieghed every 6 weeks and his weight really does vary he's been up and down all year

My DS did exactly the same between about 1.5 (when he was on the 98th centile) and 2.5 (by which time he'd dropped to between 75th and 50th). He basically just got taller and slimmer (no bad thing!). As long as your DS is "thriving" in every other way, I'm surprised the GP is concerned. Try not to worry too much; I'm sure you know in your heart of hearts whether there's anything wrong.

Is he just an active and lively 2.5 yo who runs around all day? That, to my mind, could explain the drop - a 1.5 yo gets about much less.

I'm just having a look at dd's red book. At 18 months she weighed 11.3kilos. At 2yrs 3 months she weighed 12.7 kilos, so not a huge weight gain either. It has never been queried by the HV.

Is it worth keeping a food diary for him to show that he is getting a varied diet, with all the necessary vitamins and minerals?

Hiya
My DS's, 8 and 3, haven't put on any weight for a year at least, either of them! And I swear I feed them

Doc says not to worry, they are just going upwards and inwards!

When DS1 was 2.5, he didn't then put on any weight til he was 4!!! He was quite a chubby toddler but quite a slim little boy.

The more active they get, mine do swimming, karate, drama club etc, they're not gonna keep the weight on.

As long as he's healthy and thriving, I'm sure he'll be fine.

Pitchounette, my sister did this the year she was... 7? (it was a LONG time ago!!) When she was 22 she was finally diagnosed as coeliac and a whole load of her childhood health issues suddenly made sense: her little, famine-child pot belly, her skinny legs, the fact she was always ravenous, but also often (almost daily) had tummy pains. If your ds doesn't have all this lot you can probably stop worrying about coeliac disease, hth!
