Do they help

Ive woken up and it's grey and it's the beginning of the grey time

I'm very low and anxious about winter and lack of outdoor time with ease

What can i do? Lamp?

I have a sunlight clock. Don't use it in the summer but wouldn't be without it in the winter. I hate waking up in the dark!

Yes I have a Lumie sunrise clock. Gradually gets brighter over 30 minutes. It has an alarm you can set for the end of the sunrise but it’s a hideous noise! So I still set an alarm on my phone instead. It definitely helps me get up in winter.

I have a lumie alarm clock and it's great. It was expensive but it's made mornings much easier.

megletthesecond · 27/09/2021 07:33

I've had a Lumie for a decade. Totally worth it. The bulb has only just broken for the first time.
DS has had a reconditioned Lumie for two years and no problems at all.

I have the lumie on one side of bed and radio 4 on the other.

Is there a light you can get but not an alarm clock? I don’t mind the dark mornings when (I get up and also wear an eye mask, so it wouldn’t work either) but the lack of bright warm light does get to me.

If you Google light box for sad there are options.
My aunt has one and swears by it.
She also makes sure to get out walking/cycling for an hour of daylight every possible day in winter.
We are in Ireland so there are days where it goes from black to grey back to black without ever seeing the sun.
Good luck, sad is rampant in my family and it's very tough.
I take Vit D supplements for something else but really seems to help with mood too.

I have a Lumie but I don't use it much in the mornings. I found I would rather have the extra 20 minutes asleep than be woken by the gradual sunrise and sounds. It's nice to go to sleep with the 'sunset' though.

Mufflette · 27/09/2021 07:58

Yes to both. I have this wake-up light
www.johnlewis.com/beurer-wl50-wake-up-to-daylight-table-lamp-white/p4103083?s_share=jlappdroid a big Lumie light and a smaller travel size Beurer one too.

All make everything a lot more bearable to wake up and make it through the day without needing an extra sleep!

Come and join us on the SAD thread - plenty of us going through the same thing with lots of information on light box’s, alarm clocks etc Smile www.mumsnet.com/Talk/feeling_depressed/4349708-SAD-feeling-low-in-winter-support-thread

pontiouspilates · 27/09/2021 08:07

I would not be without my Lumie. It's so much nicer and easier to wake up with a gentle, gradual light.

I have a Lumie too, but it's got a choice of different sounds to wake up to, including goats and, inexplicably, table tennis Grin. I have it set to tropical birdsong. You can set the length of the sunrise, the volume of the birds and set the whole lot for a weekly routine, e.g. Mon-Fri but not at the weekend. And you can set it for a bedtime sunset routine too. It's fab! I don't use it in the summer.

FinallyFluid · 27/09/2021 08:21

I have a lumie, I don't use it any more, I am retired. Grin

EBearhug · 27/09/2021 08:37

I wake up with a Lumie sunrise, it's a much nicer way to wake. Mine has a choice of alarm sounds, so I have birdsong, not something horrible.

Lumiere and others do plenty of SAD light boxes - larger ones and portable.

cultkid · 28/09/2021 07:01

Sorry I didn't reply I was so busy yesterday

I wake up before the sun is up without an alarm but I'm just feeling low already with the grey days we have had over the last month and actually no the last three since summer was quite shite this year and winter was so long

So I might think about a light box to have in the bedroom or in my office (admittedly I only sit there to do my hair as I actually don't really work)

The sunshine in the day isn't often that bright and I'm pregnant now so I am thinking of what are the safe options for light exposure

I'm half Irish so wonder if this is the issue but I do live in Kent on the coast

Thank you all
Always so glad to get the help
