I can smell something truly vile. It comes and goes. I've only noticed it in my house, but it lingers in the back of my throat for a bit when I go out.

DH can't smell anything. Neither can anyone else who's been to my house in the last 2 weeks. Yup, I've been asking visitors to sniff around my house.

It is vile. I can't even describe it easily because it's not like anything, iyswim. It's sort of a scorching, or imagine how you think scorching dust might smell, or might feel in the back of your throat.

It's not dust, btw. I wet wiped every single surface in the house because of this. I truly thought it might be that the house needed a good spring clean!

I've checked all the plugs and electrics. Everything is fine. I am driving DH mad by keep saying "come here, can you smell it here" every time I get a waft of it.

My sister has the keenest nose of anyone I know. She's coming on sunday and knows (nose..heehee) that her sniffer is going to be put to the test!

But if even she can't smell anything, I may be forced to accept that there isn't a smell.

If so, what could be wrong with me? I don't have a cold, or blocked nose or sinuses or anything.

Smell your microwave, or your boiler, or down the back of the cooker

controlfreaky2 · 05/12/2007 22:31

there is a truly disgusting given out by faulty light fittings.... the glue melting i think? i've not experienced it but heard of it and read about it... just a thought. but doesnt explain why only you can smell it..... maybe it's your superpower!

loopylou6 · 05/12/2007 22:37

oooooooo maybe your better posting this in the spiritual threads, it sounds ghostly to me...

YuleLoveHekateAtSolstice · 05/12/2007 22:39

I have sniffed everything in the house!! It's hard because I can smell this smell, but when I sniff right next to each thing, I can't get a more intense smell that would indicate that I am sniffing the cause of the smell, iyswim!

It wafts at me - I smell it right now. I decided it could be the multi plug, so I made dh change everything round to reduce the socket use! I've hosed the bloody house down! I thought it might be the blocked up (not used) chimney, so I made sure I stuffed the little gap so no draft came through. I moved all the furniture in case something was under there. I washed down the sofas (I'm not sure why, I'm just desperate!) I can't think what else to try! I just can't accept something so real I can taste it, could be my imagination!!!

dont want to alarm you but this might be an indication of a health problem... if it really is only you smelling this a trip to the gp might be an idea?

YuleLoveHekateAtSolstice · 05/12/2007 22:41

Do you want to come sniff my house biglips? [desperate]

YuleLoveHekateAtSolstice · 05/12/2007 22:42

I wondered about that controlfreaky - maybe blocked sinus or something? But I don't feel blocked up and I don't have a cold and haven't had a cold for ages.

Please go and see your GP - disturbance of the sense of smell should be checked out.

rosybud · 05/12/2007 22:54

I worked with a girl who had a similar thing, she could smell a terrible smell but no-one else could, cleaned her house etc. turned out to be a sinus infection. eww. better get to the doc!!

merryfraise · 06/12/2007 08:30

Is it just in your house or wherever you are?

ProjectIcarus · 06/12/2007 08:37

abcess probably. Docs and dentist.

YuleLoveHekateAtSolstice · 06/12/2007 16:20

Knowing me, I'll get round to it by Easter!!

3littlefrogs · 08/12/2007 12:17

If it isn't just in the house - that is if you can smaell it outside or elsewhere, and nobody else can smell it, please don't wait. Go to the doctor now.

wardrobemistressakasugarfree · 08/12/2007 13:05

Ditto what 3LF is saying. This week please.

Jen1978 · 09/12/2007 20:41

it could be your sinuses. I had my sinuses operated on a couple of years ago and following the surgery my nose (inside where they had operated on) got infected and I could smell this awful smell - like wet dog, and no-one else could smell it!! In the end I figured out that it was coming from up my nose and went back to the consultant who gave me antibiotics.
no idea if this helps but.........

Dalrymps · 09/12/2007 20:48

yeah, my dh can smell a smell like beef hula hoops whenever his sinuses are a bit blocked

ImBarryScott · 09/12/2007 20:54

Agree with 3LF and wadrobe mistress. this really is something your GP should have a look at sooner rather than later.

bubblepop · 09/12/2007 21:51

have you got a condenser tumble dryer in the house? if you have, check the condenser unit is not full of damp fluff. on mine you can rinse it out with the hose pipe. when it needs doing the smell it generates is horrible
