UTI Elderly mum

My mum has what we think is a UTI. Spoke to her GP on the phone who sent through a prescription. She requested a urine sample to be brought in the following day (yesterday). I have got my mum taking the tablets, but have been unable to get her to do a sample.

She isn't showing any signs of improvement and what is now concerning me is her shortness of breath and her inability to exert herself in anyway. Trying to get up the stairs took about half an hour as she had to sit down and rest. I gave her paracetemol to bring her temperature down which worked. She hasn't much appetite.

Should I have seen an improvement by now - day 3? I am currently on hold with 111. She does have a history of UTI's. She is 84.

Was just going to say to ring 111. How is she now?

When things have settled a bit, I'd have a look at the Elderly Parents Section under "Other Stuff".

Lots of useful advice in there and even an ongoing support thread Thanks

Long story short - mum is in hospital and staying over night. Hopefully, will know more tomorrow.

Hopefully they'll be able to sort her out quickly and get her back home Thanks

My dad was on a low level antibiotic all the time because of multiple UTI infections. This stopped them completely.
We had gone through a cycle of him getting them a lot - and like with your mum once they got hold they were hard to shift.
Ask the doctor. They made a massive difference to him.
I hope she feels better soon.

Thats interesting about the continuous low level antibiotics. I shall ask the doctor today - thanks.

It just stopped them completely. They're so awful when someone is elderly!
