Toothache

Recommendations for pain relief for toothache please? It's the inside of my tooth which has a filling so suspect I need antibiotics. Dentist is closed till Sunday and the pain is bad but manageable just now with an ice pack on the area. I will phone out of hours if I need to but really trying to avoid taking up an appointment if I can wait wait till Monday to get emergency appointment with dentist.

I'm going to see my friend today so I'm still going and will sit with a frozen bag of peas at my jaw if need be but would rather not if anyone can recommend something over the counter?

I've tried clove oil and regular paracetamol just now and not helping. Pain is starting to travel down my jaw and to top of my neck if that makes a difference.

I have just lost a filling and have been told the next ‘urgent’ appointment is two months away. They recommended going to boots, Asda or home bargains and buying a filling repair kit which sounds like a playdoh type substance that hardens. If the nerve was exposed this should reduce the pain.

Altérnate paracetamol and ibuprofen. Or try one of those combined with codeine.

sparklingwater1 · 18/09/2021 10:46

@CeeceeBloomingdale
My filling is still there it's similar to a pain I had before in the same tooth where the filling attached to the nerve and that's what the cause of the pain was. I got amoxicillin and a type of pin killer for it. The filling had been redone but this is about 7 years ago now so it feels like the same has happened again.

Can't believe that's the first appointment for you?! I have the fear now when I phone on Monday. Like I say it's manageable but very painful I don't see me coping past Monday to be honest like this 🙈 I've kind of set my hopes on it being sorted for then which makes it manageable.

@JollyHostess
Thanks will head to chemist and ask if any are combined with codeine

If the pain is radiating down your neck you need to call the emergency dentist unfortunately.

I've had so many bouts of toothache and infections - I was always told if it is in your neck it requires urgent attention. X

Thanks @usernamechange123242 when I say neck, I mean my double chin right now 😂 So I don't think it merits taking an out of hours appointment yet. I've got strong ibuprofen from chemist so having something to eat first before I take them and hope they take the edge off at least x

Call 111 they will direct you to an emergency dentist that is open over the weekend

BeaucoupFish · 18/09/2021 12:54

Strongest codeine you can get but be aware of the side effect of constipation
Hope you get it sorted soon 💐

sparklingwater1 · 18/09/2021 13:21

Thanks all

I've taken the strong ibuprofen so want to give that a chance to work before phoning and taking an appointment incase this eases it. Someone could be worse than me right now. I am still able to chew on one side and I can talk and things. The one time I've had tooth ache before I couldn't do any of those and the pain was so bad I begged the dentist just to pull it out there and then, thankfully they were more rational than I was at the time. I'm not near that level yet.

Will give it a couple of hours and see how I go.

Ask the pharmacist for cocodamol, it's the only thing that helped when I had an abscess. Just be careful not to take for more than a few days.

I also held vodka or gin in my mouth for a few mins and then spat out which seemed to really help

sparklingwater1 · 18/09/2021 16:31

Thanks @Jenda

The strong ibuprofen has been a godsend, I honestly just feel a small dull ache now. I'm allowed this for 3 days which hopefully will tide me over till a dentist appointment is available to check if there is an issue. I'm allowed to do this ibuprofen and paracetamol at 4 hour intervals and honestly I'm sitting at my friends, supposed to be with a glass of bubbly but instead I have water cause of the tablets but I honestly think I would have phoned nhs 24 without it. The pharmacist I seen was absolutely brilliant.

Thanks for all the advice really appreciate it ❤️

That's great, so glad you are comfortable. Hopefully that will keep you going now until you get sorted!

Well things took a turn! Saturday night the pain was unbearable, tablets not even touching it anymore. I got an emergency dental appointment on Sunday through NHS24 at my local hospital. X-rays inconclusive so doc assumed an abscess where I felt the pain. Numbed and sliced the gum but no puss just blood. Gave me antibiotics and on my way. Pain still horrific. Throughout Sunday night my left side of my face was tender and hot and I could feel it swelling. By the morning it was almost 3 times the size of my other side of my face.

Dad took my to A&E where they took one look at my face at booking in and took me straight through to give me antibiotics and pain medication.

Long story short I was transferred to another hospital 30 miles from where I stay late last night. I need to be go for an operation under general anaesthetic to clear the infection out my gum and they might need to cut into my jaw to see if it has spread there too. I'm going to lose the tooth because of it too.

Moral of the story when you feel the slightest bit of pain get it checked straight away don't try to be a hero and manage it till it's unbearable at home Confused
