Metronidazole

I have what I suspect is BV and have been prescribed metronidazole at my request.

I know to avoid alcohol, but having read online the instruction is to avoid not only drinking alcohol but products containing alcohol.

The gradual tanning moisturiser I put on yesterday contains alcohol - should I wait a few days before starting the antibiotics?

Everything says to avoid alcohol during the treatment and for 48 hours after completion but nothing about directly before...

Anyone? Confused

It means don’t eat sherry trifle, surely? Alcohol won’t get into your body from something you apply to it.

SandrasAnnoyingFriend · 17/09/2021 22:26

It's anything you'd consume. You're fine to start them.
Definitely wait the 48hrs after finishing though. I chanced it after 24hrs and felt so sick

Apparently you are meant to avoid topical products containing alcohol too! I’ve just looked at the back of all my bath & body products and they all contain alcohol or propylene glycol ShockHmm

My concern is that this tan is stuck on my skin and probably “seeping in” daily. Hmm

I'd stick to soap for a few days. Metronidazole really makes you ill (I took cough medicine and goodness I wish I hadn't!) with any alcohol at all. I'd not be prepared to take the risk after my experience (I had it for amoebic dysentery I caught in Central America, and that was 27 years ago!!!)

It’s absolutely fine. I took it for a wisdom tooth infection and didn’t stop using mouthwash. I even had half a glass of bubbly as it was my 25th birthday and felt no different!

SheWoreYellow · 17/09/2021 23:08

The alcohol will evaporate off your body. It won’t be seeping in for days.

I’m not seeing in your photo where it says about topical alcohol?

SheWoreYellow · 17/09/2021 23:12

Eg on drugs.com it says to avoid products with alcohol in but then it clarifies by saying

“Avoid alcohol or products containing propylene glycol (found in some flavored iced teas, frostings, and salad dressings) while taking metronidazole, and for three days after the course of metronidazole has finished.”

I think if you are not sure you should check with a pharmacist.

Omg, metronidazole + mouthwash was an unforgettable night for me.

It’s so strange how people can react so differently. I had a sauce on a chicken dish that was cooked with Madeira wine in it and was so ill afterwards.

I reacted really badly because of mouthwash too. When I spoke to the pharmacist they sternly informed me that nothing with alcohol is advised for a reason.

Do take it with food, or it can make you fell very sick.
