Fell off bike

So right at the end of a lovely cycle ride today with my dh, I managed to fall off my bike. Fell to the left and I put my arm out so left hand went on the ground. It didn't particularly hurt immediately, but when I got home a couple of minutes later it started to throb.
Now I can move my wrist and fingers - slight discomfort when I bend my wrist back. There is a small swelling on wrist joint on the palm side of hand and very slightly bruised. However this doesn't hurt much when pushed. Main discomfort is my thumb - again I can move it, it's just a bit throbby. Thumb almost feels stiff when I move it.
Does this sound like a sprain? Impossible to tell I know 😂

Oh poor you, sounds painful - but im not up on sprains and breaks etc

last time I fell of my bike badly I had concussion and spent 5 minutes telling my dad all about my nail varnish - only to repeat myself about 10 minutes later - a&e were fab

I’d go to A&E and get an X-ray to see. The wrist bones are tiny and you could have a fracture or bone chip off one of them. My DD fell off her skateboard and fractured her wrist and had similar symptoms to you.

CorrBlimeyGG · 16/09/2021 18:50

Given that you've got movement it's likely to be a sprain. If you want to be sure you'll need an xray. Ring 111 and see if you can get an appt via your GP or minor injuries, if you turn up at A&E you're likely to be waiting many hours.

rjacksmiss · 16/09/2021 18:51

Yeah same as mine when it was fractured! Best just get xrayed incase! x

itstoohotinhere · 16/09/2021 19:06

Hmm. I'm going to wait until tomorrow and decide whether to go to minor injuries. We never have any luck with the minor injuries unit - missed my husband's broken ankle!

The movement that hurts the most is touching my thumb to my little finger

I would get an X-ray OP. If you have got any fractures, it's best to treat them early.

Luuby86 · 17/09/2021 00:16

As someone who is 10 weeks into treatment for a broken thumb and torn ligaments I’d definitely say to get it checked. I had a football injury resulting in an avulsion fracture and torn ligaments (common injury known as skiers thumb). You honestly would not believe how much you use your thumb in everyday life…once your put into a thumb spica cast it soon becomes glaringly obvious!! You don’t want to mess about with them!

I’m off to see the hand surgeon on Monday to see if I need operating on Confused

Well it feels different this morning. It woke me up a few times in the night due to the throbbing sensation. I can use it a bit more, but when I do it feels hot and tingly. I think it's just sprained. I'm going to buy a wrist support and hope that helps. Just hope it's better by next week - I work in care and we're so so short staffed.

If it feels hot and tingling a trip to a&e would be much better. For a few hours waiting (take a book and treat it as a rest!) it's worth checking.

loubieloo4 · 18/09/2021 05:29

Oh if it was a dc would you make them wait it out?

itstoohotinhere · 18/09/2021 07:43

I know, but there's no swelling and the tiniest bit of bruising on the underside of my wrist. I can touch my wrist and move it with no pain. If I do use it - hanging the washing out etc...it aches a bit, mainly my thumb. I have a splint which keeps my thumb still too, so I keep that on most of the day and it feels a bit happier.
I honestly think it's just a sprain.

Well I went to minor injuries today as the pain has got worse. Initially told it was a scaphoid fracture so they'd x Ray it and then put a cast on. However she then pulled my hand around a bit and said it wasn't that, probably a sprain. Then said if it wasn't any better in 2 weeks go back for an x Ray Confused

Scaphoid fractures don't usually show up on X-ray straight after the injury, but may show up on X-ray after about 10 days time as the bone healing is visible. I would go back if it doesn't start to feel better in about 10 - 14 days.

BlueberrySugar · 20/09/2021 00:41

Why would she take an X-ray then tell you to come back in two weeks to X-ray the area again!

Probably if she pulled it around just to check she didn't break your bones 🤣.

Hope you feel better soon OP.

I was shutting down my surgery one night at work and I was cleaning the bottom of the dental chair and I had this horrible pain shoot through my wrist. I managed to sprain it! Not even sure how. I literally put my hand down to clean under the chair!

Ahh, that makes sense now! I didn't read your reply before I typed!

That's the exact fracture I had. Pain was absolutely thumping! I'd honestly just insist on a cast. I had mobility too. X
