Hi, I'm going to take him to the doctors tomorrow, but I was wondering if anyone else's son had experience of this. My ds2 has been complaining about it all day and he flinches in pain, I've been giving him regular Calpol etc all day. TIA .

No experience just sympathy for your poor ds.

Goodluck

SpawnChorus · 04/12/2007 22:16

OK - don;t want to panic you but please take him to A&E tonight.

DS had testicular torsion (a twisted tesicle) when he was 9 weeks old, and it prsented with a red and swollen scrotum.

IF your DS has the same thing, it's a small and very easy operation to sort it out but it needs to be seen ASAP or else the testicle can die (NB - even this ouutcome isn't the end of the world...one ball is fine...but it's nice to have a spare!)

SpawnChorus · 04/12/2007 22:18

And by ASAP I mean within hours, not days. DS's ball very nearly didn't make it cos the hospital faffed around for ages (in fact we'll only know for sure if it's OK when he hits puberty).

susiecutiemincepies · 04/12/2007 22:19

I am echoing what spawn says . take him to A&E immediatly. testicular torsion is AGONY and can cause probs long term. the quicker its sorted the better. please dont leave it over night.

Sorry, to be alarming but its really important.

susiecutiemincepies · 04/12/2007 22:22

crossed posts with your second there spawn... browny, just go in with him... if it is that, the blood supply is being reduced or stopped and it will go necrotic fairly quickly... like spawn says, its a really small operation, but necessary and he will thank you for it when hes all grown up ! ;)

SpawnChorus · 05/12/2007 08:47

Browny- any update? Really hope all is well

SpawnChorus · 05/12/2007 12:24

Bump :-)

LadyOfTheFlowers · 05/12/2007 12:34

Red, swollen happy sack. Can't imagine it would be something that should wait?

Hope all is okay, I guess she just read it and took him, no time to post back.

SpawnChorus · 05/12/2007 13:40

I know...it's one of those things which doesn't look terribly dramatic, especially when they are too young to make a real fuss about it. And you wouldn't necessarily think that it's a very urgent, going by the symptoms.

I'm usually the over-cautious one when it comes to health, but I would probably have left DS's ball til the morning if it hadn't been for DH's consternation!

Browny · 05/12/2007 17:49

Hi, sorry for the delay in getting back to you. I phoned NHS Direct and described how it looked, they it did not sound like a torsion as it would be greatly enlarged and ds2 would be in extreme pain, as it was just swollen all around they said it might be a skin infection and to just take him the g.p. today.

I took him today and they were right, it is some kind of fungal infection which makes the skin very sensitive and sore, so he prescribed canastern cream, ibuprofen and doublebase cream.

Thank you everyone for your advice, I'm so relieved .

I'm sooo relieved Great news that it's an easy to sort problem!! Hope I didn't panic you last night.

itcameuponamidnightclayre · 05/12/2007 18:02

i'm gonna hijack, althou glad your ds is ok browny. Spawnchorus, my ds had a torsion when he was born and the dr's kept telling me it was nothing and he lost his testicle, its reassuring to know someone else has been thru similar and i hope your ds will be fine xx

LadyOfTheFlowers · 05/12/2007 18:48

Oh, that's good. Not good but ykwim! Better that than a torsion!
Bless 'im.

summer111 · 05/12/2007 19:35

itcameup, been there too with my ds...

summer111 · 05/12/2007 19:37

...and ds had NO pain whatsoever - just red and swollen

susiecutiemincepies · 05/12/2007 21:28

I'm so pleased that it was not so serious. you just can't be too careful with these delicate male bits you know thank god it was not a torsion.

itcameuponamidnightclayre · 06/12/2007 08:45

oh summer11 we can do testicle watch together, i have become obsessed with the remaining one!

summer111 · 06/12/2007 22:11

I know what you mean itcameup! It's not helped much by the fact that I have a sports mad child on my hands

SpawnChorus · 06/12/2007 22:16

God I really know what you mean about obsessing over the testicle.

And DS (who is now 16 months old) likes to torment me by grabbing the whole package and s c r u n c h i n g it. It makes me gibber.

itcameuponamidnightclayre · 07/12/2007 08:47

oh no! how old is your ds summer11? are you not worried about when he hits his teens and realises that they bits are for more than tormenting me with?

summer111 · 07/12/2007 16:25

ds is 8yrs old! I'm trying to take the appraoch of crossing bridges when we come to them!!!

itcameuponamidnightclayre · 07/12/2007 17:37

ds is only 2 so we have a way to go yet, but his consultant says the same, i suppose cos they've not known any different it mite not bother them, i just cant help feeling guilty about it.
