Medical emergency or no?

My mum has returned from holiday today from abroad and within 2 hours had tummy ache and was smearing blood when she wiped (she went through the menopause yrs ago).
As the afternoon as gone on the blood has got more and more, she is constantly weeing but only in tiny amounts but there is constantly blood coming out in her urine and its hurting her a lot.
She spoke to a pharmacist as soon as it started earlier who gave her 3 days worth of antibiotics and told her to ring gp on Friday if no improvement but at that point she had a dull ache and small amount of blood.
Should we be doing anymore or just waiting for the antibiotics to kick in now it's got worse so quickly?
Shes 56.

Ring 111 they will either get a doctor to call or tell you to go to A&E.

windowstothesoul · 15/09/2021 21:08

Blood in those volumes from anywhere needs medical assistance.

Could be all sorts but in my experience it may mean the UTI has reached the kidneys and can cause problems -

Please use 111 but also a walk in or A&E would be all working expectations.

Any fever, temperature, pain?

spurs4ever · 15/09/2021 21:08

Bleeding after menopause should always be investigate. I would call 111, especially as she's uncomfortable x

Kara198 · 15/09/2021 21:17

Thanks all. She's awaiting a clinician to call back from 111 now. I'll let you know what they say.

I've peed bright red blood from a water infection before, it cleared up after the 48hrs on antibiotics

MissSmiley · 15/09/2021 21:25

Hopefully it's just that, I'm only a few years younger than your mum

Suzi888 · 15/09/2021 21:28

Happened to me years ago, abroad. I was admitted to hospital, put on a drip and told to drink many litres of water to flush my kidneys. I was literally peeing blood and slithers of kidney. It looks bad, but she should be ok after treatment Flowers. Try not to panic, hope she will be ok soon.

Suzi888 · 15/09/2021 21:29
  • may have not been kidney! That’s what the Dr said but who knows! Language barrier!
Eloisedublin123 · 15/09/2021 21:31

I’ve peed blood with a uti and antibiotics cleared it

Kara198 · 15/09/2021 21:38

Theyve just called her back go say they agree with the pharmacist and blood and pain is normal with a UTI, therefore give it 24-48 hrs for the antibiotics to work.
Hoping she improves soon ☹

Sounds like a hit, I've peed blood before it was the most horrific pain. If she can get her into a bath to wee and drink tons of water

idontlikealdi · 15/09/2021 21:40

UTI ffs

hayley013 · 15/09/2021 21:42

It does sound like an awful UTI, I really sympathise. The best pain relief I've found, and I've tried them all, is a hot water bottle, it really helps with the pain

Elouera · 15/09/2021 21:50

Which country was she is? Was she swimming in fresh water abroad? Sounds like a UTI, but in some parts of the world, I'm thinking more tropical disease like bilharzia.

Does she have a partner that went abroad too? Might be a case of 'honeymoon cystitis'! (Not that you want to hear that!!!)

Plenty of water to clear the kidneys and monitor for fevers and back pain.

Kara198 · 15/09/2021 21:51

I shall let her know, thank you.
What a rubbish end to her holiday!
111 said that as the pain is localised to her pelvic area and not elsewhere on her body (they asked about kidney pain) they're not concerned that it's anything worse than a UTI.
I've never had one thankfully, it sounds awful.

@elouera only Majorca so not overly tropical Grin
I did joke about the sex element but she assured me she was confident that wouldn't have caused it ha.
I will get on at her to drink plenty
Thank you

I have only recently started to get UTIs. The pain is unbelievable. I have peed blood too. The tablets normally work extremely quickly so I would expect to notice a change by tomorrow. Unfortunately you have to drink lots which is so cruel. Some cranberry juice then try to lay down in between as that reduces the constant urge to pee.

However if you you think it's not right and gets worse I would call again. Load up on pain killers too

mineofuselessinformation · 15/09/2021 22:12

A good tip is to have a drink every time you go for a wee. It's annoying as you will need to wee a lot, but very effective in flushing anything though.

Kara198 · 16/09/2021 21:28

Evening, just to update she is almost 100% back to health tonight. The blood stopped by lunch and the pain is only there at the very end of the wee so seems the antibiotics worked a treat.
Thanks again!
