How to take cough medicine

Ok, so we've shot ourselves in the foot by trying to give our dd cough medicine while she was crying. This has happened twice now- she crys because she's in pain from the coughing, we try to give cough medicine, via syringe under the tongue, she inhales and things just escalate.
Long and the short of it is, any type of medicine in liquid form she hates and starts uncontrollably crying upon site. Any tips on how we can give it to her in a more subtle way would be appreciated.
thanks
The hubby ;)

Instead of giving it to her under the tongue try in the side of her mouth inbetween her teeth and cheek-does that make sense?
I also try giving it in very small squirts as cough mixture is really sticky and always makes my ds cough after having it.
Best of luck

My Dr (I read this on NHS Direct too) said that cough mixture was a waste of time. No conclusive evidence that it does anything anyway so you could just not give her it How old is she? A little warmed through honey and lemon is just as soothing.

In side of mouth, definitely - and IME it actually helps if they are crying as they have to swallow and therefore can't spit it out - if it is in her cheek she shouldn't inhale it.

A friend who is also a doctor said that cough mixture was a waste of time - but I think it depends on the cough. DS had a constant hack from snot running down the back of his throat and Sudafed worked a treat at settling the snot / relaxing him for long enough for him to get to sleep. Aforementioned friend ended up borrowing it for her DD when we were on holiday together and it worked for her too!!
