What to do - possible puncture wound/something in foot?

Hoping someone can suggest the best way to help DD with her foot. She was bodyboarding in the sea about 3 weeks ago in Cornwall, and suddenly hurt her foot - thought at first she had hit it on a rock or something. I suggested she get out and let me look at it, but after a minute or two she said it had stopped hurting and wanted to stay in. Later she said it was sore again when walking on it, so I took a look but there wasn't much to see - a slight whitish line maybe, I thought perhaps she had cut it on a sharp shell or something, but there wasn't any blood and later she felt fine again.

However since then, it has mostly been fine (she's been doing sports and so on), but once in a while it suddenly starts hurting her again and she finds walking on it painful. I've looked at it again but there's very little to see - no puffiness or signs of infection, but what looked like maybe a couple of tiny punctures and possibly something inside (but just tiny dark dots if anything, so it's hard to be sure). So I'm now wondering whether she might have something like teeny bits of spines or something in there?

I'm not sure what to do though as there's so little to see, nothing to get hold of etc. so I doubt taking her to the doctor would help and don't want to waste their time, especially as most of the time it doesn't even hurt. But I wondered whether there's anything we can do to try and get anything that might be in there out, especially as it's still bothering her occasionally nearly 3 weeks later. Would soaking it/hot water help for example, or is there anything we could put on it? Thank you!

DD had a similar thing with a tiny fragment of china from a broken plate in her foot. In the end, it had to be removed at A&E with local anaesthetic because it hurt & she wouldn't let anyone touch it.

you can get those corn plasters with a hole which would take the pressure off. that would help to start with.

Thanks parietal. Might look at getting some of those plasters.

I had another look as she was complaining again yesterday, still not much to see but it looks like there are 3 teeny punctures, in a line. One or possibly two looked a little like there might be something very small in, like when you have a splinter, but I couldn't feel anything poking out or manage to catch anything with tweezers. But she's been running round all morning on it, so trying to dig out whatever might be in there would probably be worse than it is now!

Visit a gp or podiatrist. They can conduct a thorough investigation. See podiatrist if you don't think it worth taking a gp apt for.

There was someone in here the other day who thought she got all the glass out if child’s hand or foot but a scan showed she hadn’t

So it could be some kind of scan is required to rule anything out?

I’d get in touch with the gp surgery and see what they suggest.

Could have been a weaverfish.

whatisheupto · 11/09/2021 23:25

You could try some drawing ointment overnight to draw it out? Magnesium sulphate paste. From chemist.

A simple stone bruise can cause spots of blood under the skin and pain. Was it a stone beach or sand? Did she walk onto a stone?

HerNameIsIncontinentiaButtocks · 11/09/2021 23:34

Wouldn't be a weaverfish, she'd truly know about it if it was! More likely something inert but sharp broken off in a wound, urchin spikes maybe.

ahagwearsapointybonnet · 13/09/2021 16:13

Thanks all, just seen the new posts! Yes I had wondered about something like sea urchin spines, I also googled weeverfish but it sounded like that would have hurt a lot more at the time so I doubted it could be that.

I have an update though - yesterday I managed to persuade DD to try soaking it in hot water for a bit to see if it would help anything come out. Well apparently after that she thought she could feel something in a couple of the bits that looked like puncture holes, and she had a go at them with tweezers and thinks she managed to get something out of one or maybe two of them. She said whatever it was was very small, like grains of sand, but we're still not sure exactly what it was. So I'm hoping that may have sorted it, but we'll need to give it a few days and see whether she has any more pain (as it was only sometimes hurting). If it comes back we'll try some of the other suggestions made. Thanks for all the help! 💐
