I cant belive it , shes been ok for about 3weeks just and now 48hrs before surgery is due to sort her out and shes got a cold and a cough. Ive called the care co ordinator at Great Ormand st and theyve asked me to get her seen by a gp today and checked over.

Its strange I want her to get sorted , but now Im anxious as Im not sure about her going under GA with this.

Anyone had the same experience???

I cant stop crying , Im feeling really unwell and rubbish myself, its all getting so overwhelming.

Hi Melsy..my DS had his op for Tonsils and Adenoids cancelled three times over the last two months. Each time, usually just days before he would come down with something, cough and cold usually + temp. The op was at Gt.Portland but done by the GOSH consultant, a Mrs.W...she said the GA was not advisable for a small one, our son is under 3. We were not comfortable about it either and did not want him to have the procedure unless on good form. Looks like we'll be waiting till next year at this rate!

saggarmakersbottomknocker · 04/12/2007 10:08

oh blimmin eck melsey. It just typical.

I'd be bothered if she's got a cough TBH. I straightforward cold (particularly the end of one) might be OK but anything chesty is likely to be a no no. You're bound to be upset as you've been building yourself up to it.

If it doesn't go ahead let them know if you're available for cancellations; there will be lots over the next few weeks.

melsy · 04/12/2007 13:07

Shes got an appointment with the gp this afternoon , but they have no jurisdiction of course over whether it should go ahead.

Looks like we'll have to make the trip up there anyway , as we dont know which way to go.

Her Nursery teacher says shes been fine today , no sign of cold at all, until that is she went into the playground and coughed a really hazey cough when I picked her up. shes had this cough on and of for weeks and weeks , so its really hard to tell , but the blocked nose has been worse the last few days.

Im beside myself with anxiety and tension

I know what you are going through ..really! with my DS it was the same, trying to decide what was best...but each time he made the decision for us by clearly being ill the day before...if you don't know what to do on the day and go ahead and go down to London the anaesthetist will be the one who will decide in the end..we were told anything chesty, any temperature he would not do it...but as I said before that was with a child under 3. If older I don't think they are as concerned about mild cough/colds...Its unreal how they time it though...best best wishes whatever you end up doing..

The cough could be realted to the whole tonsils adenoids thing melsy. ds2 had horrendous post-nasal drip and coughed constantly. It's a long trip up for you but as dad12 says it's the anaesthetist's call - they won't do it if they aren't happy.

And eat woman!

melsy · 04/12/2007 16:52

Just got back from gp , she has a slight fever 37.9 ,but no sign of infection. Gp said a virus could be brewing may be.

Ive phoned GOSH and yes they've said it really depends on the anesthetists in the morning and their own experience, as you rightly said saggar.

Looks like we'll still be making the trip to there at 5:30 am for 7 !!!

BOyyoooo what a runaround , I feel like death warmed up.

cant eatmuch at all , have stomach bug darn it !!!!!

You'll have to starve her too I suppose. Oh the joys. Good luck if it goes ahead - are you supposed to be staying overnight?

melsy · 04/12/2007 18:11

yes meant to be overnight for obs due to the sleep apnea and possibly needing oxygen.

Yes got to starve her , which means no breakfast and lots of crying and moaning about, poor kid. Not sure up to which time she can have water , need to check as she always wants a drink 1st thing.

good luck for 2morrow was just trying to find ur last thread when i saw this one

my DS had a GA when he had RSV, ananestic bloke came round and checked him over and gave him all clear for GA so fingers crossed for 2morrow, we left at 7am yesterday to get to gosh and got there at 9.45, also took 2.5 hours to get home and that was not in rush hour, good luck

saggarmakersbottomknocker · 05/12/2007 09:22

Hoping all is OK today melsy.

Nat - My dd had 9 hour open heart surgery whilst she had raging RSV - not really the ideal situation but had no choice - threw a bit of a spanner in the works recoverwise .

That sounds like a bit of a journey for you yesterday. Was all OK?

natalies1982 · 05/12/2007 09:40

wow 9 hours that must of felt like a lifetime hun, is ur lo ok now or does she need future ops?

journey was horrid so much traffic i hate it have to do it again in 4 weeks time. my ds went for CF testing and chest xray plus hes usual app, hes chest xray was not good, showed hyperinflation of the lungs which seems to be linked to damage due to poor control of asthma but they wont go into detail until hes sweat test is back, all the bottom of his xray was white to. we should hear today if its postive so hoping we dont get a call.

saggarmakersbottomknocker · 06/12/2007 11:39

Hope you get good news Nat.

Looks like they kept Melsy in anyway.

dd does OK - not 'fixable' but she is manageable at the moment

saggarmakersbottomknocker · 07/12/2007 08:50

Melsy - did it go OK?

melsy · 07/12/2007 11:19

All went ok, came home yesterday afternoon ,she did really well , came round and promptly said Im hungry weres my breakfast !!! The other surprise was that she didnt conk out after coming round, as kids normally do,and stayed up ALL DAY like a jack in the box!!!!

After that it was such a shame she had a really rough night. The consultant discusssed a medication plan inc voltarol post op but never wrote it up. Despite her having it rectally during the op , once it came up to the 8hr mark , they said they couldnt give her anymore due to a hospital policy and the fact it wasnt in her notes, yet we had been told she could. So she was in discomfort all night and hardly slept due to it.They finally tracked down the consultants team who allowed a dose at midnight, by which time she had got into such a state she couldn't calm down for another 2hrs. The consultant came round the next morning and apologised and said he wasnt aware of the policy at GOSH as he normally presides over the same op at the Portland, (our insurance didnt cover there and we felt more secure in her care being at GOSH !!! how ironic), were the nurses would have given it . They were very good though as PALS were called to come and see me 1st thing to log my feedback and disappointment about the situation.

Despite this they were very good and very caring and we did feel quite looked after. I had a bad reaction to the filtration system (asthma) and they were even going to move our whole room for that.

Blimey its all come out here , please excuse my self debriefing. Seems to help me deal with these things.

OP posts:
saggarmakersbottomknocker · 07/12/2007 11:22

lol at debriefing melsy. Yes it definitely helps to get it out. Glad she came through OK but sorry about the mix-up with the pain relief.
