5th metatarsal fracture

Hi there,

I broke my 5th metatarsal (Jones fracture) a little over 2 months ago.

A few weeks ago I had my review at the fracture
Clinic and the bone wasn’t completely healed but healed enough that they said I didn’t need my space boot/ crutches anymore.

Anyway, by the end of the day my foot is really hurting. I’ve just got the kids from school and I don’t want to move anymore. Is this normal for this stage of healing?

Thanks.

I broke mine a year ago and i found that it still hurt after the 6 week healing time they suggested initially. I never had any follow up appointment though because of covid. They just washed their hands of me after they diagnosed the break.

I think it was about 3 months before it started to feel normal. For a few months after I would get occasional aching but nothing major. It’s totally fine now. Your pain sounds a bit more than that though so might be worth following up again with the hospital

I broke this 16 months ago. It took a lot longer than I expected to completely be pain free and even now if I'm on my feet alot it can be sore at night. Did you do physio? The bone heals quickly but the muscles and ligaments need to be exercised back to work. When I remember to do them I do find the stretches help and relieves the pains.

Dh broke his 5th metatarsal a week ago. Nasty but "clean" break so was given a boot in a&e and was wheeled to the curb in hospital wheelchair for me to collect him (no crutches apparently the hospital didn't have any) so had to drive miles to pick some up from a shop the next day.

Hes in lots of pain, brusing is really bad looks likely he's done some ligament damage as well but a&e said no (he's damaged ligaments several times before)

He got 1 email from fracture clinic saying thet don't beed to see him and to only contact them in 3 months if it's still hurting daily. Pharmacy only suggested neurofen plus for the pain.

We've googled some exercises and I am making sure he's doing them. Anything else he should be doing?

He's still at work, as his boss said he drives an automatic and "only" broke his left foot....
