Breast clinic referral

Hi all,

Need a bit of an outlet at the moment as feel like I'm inside of my own head a bit too much.

I've been referred to the breast clinic following a 2nd GP examination of 3 lumps in my left breast, as no hormonal changes were found in 2 of them. The Dr said that it could be up to a 6 week wait for an appointment which I just know is going to drive me absolutely nutty.

I am 34, have 3 children and currently on maternity leave with my 9 week old. I feel like my time off with her is being overshadowed by this horrible worry. I was diagnosed with fybrocystic breast disease in 2017, so am quite strict with examining myself as I need to be familiar with my own lumpiness. After pregnancy, I found a large thickened area above the nipple, a marble sized lump in the lower breast and what has turned out to be a cyst on the side of my breast, that one changes during my cycle which is why my GP is sure its a cyst.

I feel like as there are two areas of concern that I have double the chance of receiving bad news :( is anyone else in the same boat at the moment? does anyone have any advice on how to get through the next few weeks? is the 6 week wait even normal? It feels like such a long time, especially as I had to wait 2 weeks between gp appointments to eliminate hormonal changes.

Thank you in advance Flowers

I’m sorry you might have to wait up to 6 weeks. I had treatment earlier in the year but was seen quickly. Could you phone the hospital and ask what the wait time is? I thought for cancer referrals they usually see you within 2 weeks. I also think you can ask your GP to see if they can find a different hospital with a shorter wait time. Good luck.

Thank you - I think I will try and call them once if I don't receive my letter soon or the date is too far away. Although our local breast clinic is meant to be amazing and very new so I'm hesitant to transfer as I'd feel very happy to be seen there. I'm hoping my GP was just being overcautious with her advice and I will get seen sooner!
