Awful, awful headache

Woeismethischristmas · 01/09/2021 20:38

I had a bit of a cold yesterday, I think I’ve caught the back to school lurgy off the kids. They had pcr test not covid. Woke up at 4am with an awful headache. It’s all on one side, starts on the back, left hand side, works it’s way out around the ear.

Not normally a headache type person, maybe with the flu or a bit of a hangover but this is in another league. I’ve necked down all the over the counter painkillers I can find which barely took the edge off. I’ve taken two codiene 30 from when I broke my wrist a few years back and it still hurts but not as badly. I’m not sure if it’s an ear infection settling in , ear doesn’t hurt but feels oddly pressurised. Hurts to chew or swallow.

Does anyone have any advice as to what might help?

If you bend down and straighten ip quickly is the pain worse? That could be sinusitis- over the counter Sudafed will help with that. If you haven't had a negative pcr get one of those too as you could have picked up covid elsewhere

Woeismethischristmas · 01/09/2021 20:45

Bending and straightening makes no difference to the pain. I did a walk in left test this afternoon. Negative. weirdly despite my nose dripping like a tap all yesterday my sinuses seem completely clear.

I would get a pcr test. A family member had an awful, awful headache- couldn’t sleep and crying and it turned out to be viral meningitis. She was fine, but be careful if it’s very bad and doesn’t get better.

happytoday73 · 01/09/2021 20:51

Honestly...as you've already had PCR I'd go to chemist and ask pharmacist what he thinks will help... Likely s/he will ask about other symptoms etc. Is your BP ok

Do you mean a walk in lateral flow test?

I would get a PCR.

The worst headache I ever had turned out to be viral meningitis. It’s definitely worth checking out with a Dr. I got a bit of a row for taking a few days to seek medical advice as a very bad headache can indicate a number of quite serious conditions.

Cornwallnewbie · 01/09/2021 20:57

And should have said that the the doctor told me that you should always seek medical advice about a headache severe enough to wake you up

Woeismethischristmas · 01/09/2021 21:03

Yes I had a walk in lateral flow test at the mobile testing unit. I think my BP is ok normally fairly healthy so haven’t seen a doctor in the last year or so. Honestly I just about sobbed with relief when I found that old packet of codiene. I can’t believe how much it still hurts. Will definitely try and speak with a doctor tomorrow

@Cornwallnewbie That must've been horrible! I had the worst headache of my life my first day of suspected covid (tested negative) and I've had MRSA sinus infections and multiple sinus surgeries (with packing post operatively)

Bagelsandbrie · 02/09/2021 07:49

Sorry to hear this op, hope you get sorted quickly and it’s something easily treatable.

HollowTalk · 02/09/2021 08:02

I hope everything is ok, OP.

HeartvsBrain · 02/09/2021 08:13

Oh dear, sorry to hear that OP, but I do hope that it means you can get some effective pain killers very soon. Headaches can be a symptom of Bell's Palsy - a tempory disease caused by virus's, and you said that your children hadn't been well - but hopefully, as you are definitely in the right place, you will get any diagnosis quickly, so that the treatment can start quickly too. Good luck OP, I will be thinking of you today, as I am sure will the others who have seen your posts 💐

Lougle · 02/09/2021 08:17

How scary for you OP 💐 You're in the right place now. Let us know how you get on.

Woeismethischristmas · 02/09/2021 15:17

Discharged with a diagnosis of Bell’s palsy still got an awful headache but lots of painkillers and steroids. It’s awful tbh still got a terrible headache and my vision is really blurry. Hoping the pills kick in.

Thank you though for your thoughts.
