Paranoid after DS in hospital

Vmama · 02/12/2007 19:39

hello My 9 month old DS has had recurrent cough and high temperatures which went on for 2 months on and off and culminated in 3 days in hospital on IV abs and oxygen. He was all clear for a week when I stayed off work with him and then a week after going back to nursery he's bow coughing and snotty again. I'm freaking out now every time he coughs and I have this gut feeling that there's something more seriously wrong with him -have been wondering about cystic fibrosis even though there's no family history. Is it normal for them to be ill so much at this age? It has all started since he started nursery but it's really taking it's toll on all of us and though work have been great I really don't want to keep being off all the time -plus obviously I don't want him to be ill so much. Can anyone reassure/advise me?

Have started giving Abidec vitamins tonight in desperation -he's had 5 rounds of abs now which seems ridiculous for one so young and I'm worried that his immunity may have been affected by all the drugs.

hi vmama. there are a few of us on here with lo's with chest probs. My dd has suffered since she was 1. she had bronchilitis. If i remember rightly, they can carry a certain bacteria from that, which can make them prone to chest infections, viral wheeze and asthma. my dd has been in hospital lots and has had quite a lot of ab's and steroids. they check her growth regularly to ensure the medicines are not affecting her too badly, and she has been well for about 6 months now! it is awful, and scary, but they do need the drugs to get them through it when they are so little. hth

my sisters lo is always ill she has been in hosp 6times in 15months with different viruses etc.
my younget sister has cf and she wasnt that ill as a baby
when he has been at nursery a while he will get used to the bugs and not get them as easy

My dd2 had constant rounds of coughs, colds, high temps and vomiting for almost the first 20 months of her life. Now she is 3 and very rarley unwell July was when she was last unwell. She has built up a really strong immune system. Hopefully your son will have a strong immunity soon.

Vmama, there are some truly unpleasant bugs around this winter - probably every winter, but seems worse to me this year. Nursery certainly plays a part in building immune systems, too!

I just wanted to add that its v v normal to be concerned after having had a LO in hospital; my dd2 had bronchiolitis at 4 weeks old, and was very ill for a week. Its taken me a year to be less than paranoid every time she catches a cough (often: she has a 3 yr old sister) and even now, I get twitchy.

Hugs to you, and get well soon to your LO xx

Oh, and if he's had lots of ABs, you might want to give him some kiddies acidophilus (Solgar do one, not sure who else) to rebalance his gut: dd ended up with horrible diarrhoea, but probiotics sorted it quite fast.

Vmama · 03/12/2007 08:04

thanks everyone -Elibean I gave him live yoghurt with each course of abs and it did seem to help with the diarrhoea

He only seems to have about 1-2 weeks of being well after finishing a course of abs and then he gets something else -this has been ongoing since September -I'm hoping you're right and he will have great immunity -what did everyone do with regards to work? I'm the main earner in our house as DH has just started his own business so it's important that I can work but I could never leave him if he was really ill obviously but what about those days when he's ill but not too bad? Coughing snotty etc but no temp? what did everyone do?

DS ill again could be just teething but he's had temp and been sleeping loads the last couple of days plus permanently hs hand in his mouth.

We are currently waiting on an ECG to find out what's behind tyhe heart murmur they picked up while he was in with pneumonia so am wondering if it could all be related -anyone with any experience or any docs?

Recurrent chest infections, heart murmur but gaining weight well and was healthy till 7 months when he started nursery then had had something almost all the time -has only gone 2 weeks between illnesses.

I cam also feel a rattle in his chest but the last time I felt it the paed told me it was actually because of a viral throat infection...

advice please am trying not to think the worst but it's hard

Vmama - the murmur might not be anything to be concerned about. Some children do have a murmur just when they are poorly, but have no heart problem as such.

He sounds like he's had a rough time of it lately.

Vmama · 22/12/2007 18:52

thank you Mrs Grinch I know there's no rule and kids do get ill but how often do you think is acceptable for him to be ill before it points to something more serious -i'm a first-time mum and whilst i know they do get lots of sniffles etc i just keep getting this doom and gloom gut feeling as it just seems relentless and he's normally the happiest child in the world so it kills me to see him so low.
