Anyone know the statistics of having another baby with congential heart defect after having one??

Want to try for another baby, but unsure of this??

mower, I read somewhere, probably internet so of dubious credibility, that it is 1 in 50.

Dd, my first, had a big VSD that needed surgical correction. When I become pregnant with ds, I asked my hospital to refer me to Kings College Hospital, South London for the 13 and 20 week scans - they specialise in fetal medicine and have the best doctors and clearest machines. I got referred no problems and Kings were happy to scan. The good thing is that they did 2 scans at 20 weeks, the normal one and then a special cardiac scan by a cardiologist using a scan machine specifically to look at the heart. Ds was all clear.

Not sure - have you looked on www.heartline.org.uk?

I have a heart healthy ds1, a dd with a (repaired) VSD and a ds2 who is heart healthy.

Hi mower - I'm mum to a dd with a significant CHD - she's my third though so no more babies.

I post on the messge board on the site that Wallace has linked to. There are quite a few mums on there who are pregnant at the moment, a couple after having children with heart problems. I think in general the risk is slightly greater with a subsequent pregnancy.

What congenital heart defect does your child have?

Frostythesnownorris · 02/12/2007 21:27

Hi!
I also belong to Heartline,my youngest child has a heart condition. Like saggar I don't intend to have any more children as I already have four daughters .
Sorry I couldn't be more help with your question, just wanted to let you know there are others here .

Way up Frosty. How's things?

Snowmam2Jamie · 02/12/2007 23:15

Hi all! I am also a member of Heartline and another heartmum (usually my screenname). I am pretty much in the same boat as you Mower, toying with the idea of another baby (not a word to anyone Saggar, Wallace & FrostythesnowNorris!). I have a heart healthy ds who's 6 and then my heart child, who's 3. I was told the the chances increase from 1% to 3-5%, so still a 95% chance of having a heart healthy baby. Good luck to you!

Oh secret is safe with me Snowmam ( like the name)

Hi - I have dd1 - heart healthy and then dd2 - pulmonary stenosis - thankfully mild. I had dd3 in April and we were offered an ante-natal cardiac scan which we had at 18 weeks. Really impressed by the detail you could see and she is also heart healthy. The way I looked at it - nobody can tell me why dd2 was born with a chd - so I can never know if I'm more likely to have another child with a chd. So it didn't play a part in deciding whether to go for a third baby. But dd2's defect is minor - has never caused her any problems and we were told recently is very unlikely to ever need treatment. I would think there's a lot more to think about if you have had a child who has been very sick.

I've emailed you via HL so we don't clog this one up

Snowmam-I'm not sure who you are "over there" so I certainly won't tell anyone .
