Have you got a First Aid box?

I'm new to Mumsnet, and mistakenly posted this in the wrong place yesterday. I just wondered where other people keep plasters and pills and Savlon... All together in one place? Is a First Aid box a good idea? What's in yours and where do you keep it? Do you keep paracetamol and calpol and gaviscon in it? Do you separate OTC from prescription pills and creams etc? I need to find better ways of dealing with all the stuff you get from the pharmacy or chemist's, or similar shelves in the supermarket. Advice please.

Yes. I've got a massive tupperware box that lives on top of the fridge. It's about 18 inches square and 9 inches high. It's probably designed to hold a big cake. All plasters, savlon, calpol, the ends of odd prescription meds and prescription meds that aren't a daily thing but I need to have in stock for if conditions flare up.

Meds I take daily (usually bed time) are in the bedroom on top of the wardrobe.

SunshineCake · 29/08/2021 20:50

I have two that live in my wardrobe.

One is labelled illness with everything we have for when we are ill. The second is marked injuries and has what we would need if we were injured. In the kitchen I keep plasters and paracetamol. I also have a first aid box with a mixture of things in the boot of my car. Once a year I go through all the boxes and get rid of our of date things where the date matters.

I have a first aid box for emergencies with medi wipes, gloves, plasters, bandages, dressings, etc which lives on a shelf in my bathroom cupboard. It’s easily grabable if I need it it in a hurry. Then on the shelf above I have all the piriton, calpol, lemsips, paracetamol, etc.

dizzydizzydizzy · 29/08/2021 21:44

Same as @sparklyblue81. I also have medical ice packs in the freezer.

Vital to have a first aid kit because you never know when an accident is going to happen.

I bought a St. John's Ambulance kit and then added a couple of bits that I thought we might need.

We have plasters… then meds…. And that’s about it 🤣

Ohsoquiiieeetttttt454333 · 29/08/2021 21:47

I think we do have a first aid kit in our car tho… as it’s a lease car and comes as standard

Megan2018 · 29/08/2021 21:50

All our medications and first aid stuff are in the bathroom cabinets.
Might move them when DD bigger but for now safe enough aa they are out of reach of a 2yo.

Aurorie11 · 29/08/2021 21:52

No box, but high shelf (I need a stool to reach stuff) in a kitchen cupboard

NannyR · 29/08/2021 21:55

I keep medicines and stuff like plasters in a small drawer in the bathroom (no kids in the house so I don't need to keep them out of reach or locked away).
I have a first aid kit in the cupboard under the sink in the kitchen and one in the car too.

RuthW · 29/08/2021 21:56

Yes I have a big box. Prescription meds kept separate

Paracetamol
Ibuprofen
Gaviscon
Antihistamines
Loperamide
Burn dressing
Sting spray
Dressings various sizes
Sticky tape
Plasters
Bandages
Oximeter
Thermometer

Probably other things too that I've missed out.

icedcoffees · 29/08/2021 21:57

Yes - one in the house and one in each car too.

Bluntness100 · 29/08/2021 21:58

Yes.

MyMabel · 29/08/2021 21:59

I have a dedicated cupboard in the corner of my kitchen by the sink. The top level is non-baby/toddler first aid and the second level is the fun coloured plasters, calpol,
Baby Nurofen, baby vaporub, baby vitamins.

Greenandcabbagelooking · 29/08/2021 22:00

First aid kit in a big black box with First Aid stickers on it.
Prescription meds live on my dressing table.

Unihorn · 29/08/2021 22:01

I have approximately 6 plasters, a bandage, Calpol and about 4 paracetamol... I feel woefully unprepared.

HungryHippo11 · 29/08/2021 22:06

We have a ridiculously big box which i seem to keep adding to with random things 😂

I have a "proper" first aid kit which I bought from Amazon. Also in there is various sizes and types of plasters and bandages, tablets such as ovex, paracetamol, throat lozenges, antihistamines, vitamin tablets. Creams e.g. aloe Vera, aftersun, anthisan, anusol, Emla
I keep sanitary towels and pull ups in there in case of diarrhoea (for the kids) and baby wipes and cotton wool buds and pads.

Basically too much stuff and I've never used much of it, but if something does happen I'm prepared!

BrieAndChilli · 29/08/2021 22:11

We have
First aid kits in both cars.
DH has several first aid kits (scout leader)
I have a comprehensive first aid kit that I take in holiday/days out eg hiking etc
I also have a mini first aid kit in my handbag (calpol sachets, painkillers, plaster etc)

We used to have a lockable first aid cabinet when the kids were small. Now we have a large (prob 7-8 foot) tall cabinet in the downstairs bathroom. It has lots of mini boxes in labelled
So things like
Paracetamol
Ibuprofen
Plasters
Bandages
Ear/nose stuff- olive oil drops, vicks etc
Eye stuff (eye drops of various types - we wear contacts)
Wound dressing and Sheri strips
Diagnostics - thermometer/odometer etc
Tools - scissors/tweezers/syringes etc
Cough stuff
Suncream/after sun
Bug stuff
Prescription stuff
Nit stuff - combs and shampoo spray etc
Calpol

Probably some other categories , I can’t remember without looking.

Gagagardener · 29/08/2021 22:57

Thank you. I'm getting some ideas for how to sort our stuff. When I used tweezers to pull out a splinter, I thought it.wd be a good idea to keep them near the plasters - but then I wanted to tweeze out a rogue hair or two and had no idea where they were. Moral: buy another pair!

I’m terrible. A few months ago I grated my finger while cooking and realised I had no plasters in the house. Whoops. I have two different types now.

I did stock up on paracetamol in case of Covid though which did come in handy.

No children so I’m only endangering myself.
