How to ease constipation without medication or food

Happy36 · 29/08/2021 19:52

I'm constipated as for the last month I've been on diarrhoea medication and a very restricted low fibre diet following cancer treatment.

Finally I can feel a bowel movement coming but it is very hard. I can't take or eat anything (other than drinking water) to encourage or soften it. Is there anything else I can do? Stretching, or something, maybe?

Can you manage a walk? Exercise is supposed to be good for constipation.

Elouera · 29/08/2021 19:55

Sorry to hear about everything going on. I swear by a squatty potty, or anything to life the feet into more of a squatting position, whilst still sitting on a regular, western toilet. It will straighten the bowel, making it MUCH easier to open the bowels. Many brands are available, including fold up one, not just that one though.

Heat on your back or stomach. Also look up squatty potty positions , they can help to get everything in the right position

Can you have a cup of coffee and go for a walk? That's normally pretty good at shifting the bowels.

A long walk, lots of fluids (preferably water) and get your knees above your pelvis when on the toilet.

kirstyr3892 · 29/08/2021 19:57

I've found tummy massage and squatting in a deep squat position helpful to get things moving in the past Smile and lots of water!

LittleJules59 · 29/08/2021 19:59

When I was in hospital decades ago, I was given a suppository to soften a very large hard stool, and it worked a treat. Not sure where/how you would get hold of such a thing this late on Sunday, but if you google all night pharmacies near you, you might get lucky...

Best of luck.

picklemewalnuts · 29/08/2021 19:59

Caffeine. If you can't drink coffee, then a caffeine tablet will do.

Walking, plenty of water.

orinocosfavoritecake · 29/08/2021 20:01

Sit on the toilet, squatty potty style, for te n minutes without trying to do a poo. Just see what gravity does.

LoveFall · 29/08/2021 20:05

If you are allowed, a glycerin suppository may work. Also a Fleet enema. I have used them to prep for a sigmoidoscopy quite effectively.

I am sorry you are having troubles.

Kanaloa · 29/08/2021 20:12

When my little boy used to get constipated, cycling his legs and a warm bath seemed to do the trick. Of course we then had to fish the poo out of the bath water, but I’m sure you won’t have that problem!

leavesthataregreen · 29/08/2021 20:19

strong coffee and plenty of room temperature water.

gigi556 · 29/08/2021 20:20

Put some peppermint essential oil in the toilet before you sit down and use a stool or squatty potty to put you feet/legs in a squat position.

Coachradley · 29/08/2021 20:22

You need to eat prunes or drink prune juice

Sillysuzie · 29/08/2021 20:22

Warm bath and a hot drink might help

minipie · 29/08/2021 20:24

Cat and cow position, repeatedly

minipie · 29/08/2021 20:25

Also a fairly swift 15+ minute walk

Verbena87 · 29/08/2021 20:26

Warm bath, hot water, glycerine suppository and get into a deep squat (feet on the seat). Good luck, it is so miserable.

When I had awful constipation I found once I’d cleared the really hard poo daily low doses of lactoluse were great if you can have that?

FatAnkles · 29/08/2021 20:29

I know you said not food but I eat a bowl of good quality fruit and nut muesli every morning.

Bananarice · 29/08/2021 20:32

Going for a walk and a hot bath afterwards.

PickAChew · 29/08/2021 20:32

Are you allowed to use glycerin suppositories? They are magical.

MumofPsuedoAdult · 29/08/2021 20:33

Tummy crunches!

Inthetropics · 29/08/2021 20:39

Heat on your back. Tons os water. Walking and farting freely. Grin Just remembered the "snap and farted" thread!

Elieza · 29/08/2021 20:40

Can you ring nhs24. They may have some advice or be able to give you suppositories?

Sounds like your medication may be needing adjusted if it’s going the other way now?

Happy36 · 29/08/2021 21:43

Thanks, all. Really appreciate it. Am walking around the flat. Have tried with raised knees which was better but still too hard for now.

Don't have any glycerin suppositories, unfortunately.
