Evening Primrose Oil for PMT...

walkinginaWILKIEwonderland · 02/12/2007 13:35

I suffer very badly from PMT related depression and anger. The ADs I am on have stopped me being a weeping mess but I still suffer with really terrible rage/anger the week leading to period time.

Had tablet review with GP and she suggested taking Evening Primrose Oil to try and help.

Anyone else done this? Has it worked? How much should you take? Where is cheapest place to buy it from?

Thanks in advance

Yep, starflower oil also works well but you need high strength tablets - holland and barratt are normally the cheapest and best source.

there was another thread recently recommending agnus cactus (I think thats what it is called) and magnesium. I bought some at holland and barratt the other day. Haven't started taking them yet.

there are quite a few PMT threads on here - click on 'search for messages' at the top of the page and type in PMT as a search.

Someone recommended Magnesium OK, Agnus Castus, Evening Primrose (high strength), other than that your GP will inevitably prescribe AD's.

I am in the same situation as you at the moment- I suffer terrible PMT 2 weeks before period and have tried everything, and the only thing that works are AD's - although I am not on them at the moment as I am trying those mentioned above first.

You have my sympathy, its awful I know.

Thanks - will have a search

The GP thinks this is closest to what I have PMDD

It is so horrilbe - I feel like such a nasty person when I am having my low/angry days and have zero tolerance of everyone (except my DS), I snap at my husband, swear a lot and find myself thinking really horrilbe things about other people that are totally unreasonable.

It is awful.

Just read about PMDD and it sounds exactly what i have. What AD's are you on OP?

My GP presecribed Norethisterone (a hormone pill) but I felt worse so have stopped taking it. She said the other options were Prozac or Setraline or the pill, but as mentioned on the netdoctor site, it can make a womans syptoms worse in some cases.

I have to admit I have never heard of PMDD before.

I'm on Citalopram. Was on Fluoxetine (Prozac) but couldn't get on with it.

I just started cipralex a few months ago and have started having horrible pmt, just as you describe.....
i am wondering if it is not the fault of the ad.
i also am having major breakouts in the hormone area on the face (lower face and neck)

may choose to go off the ads - i dont know if this pmt isn't worse than how i was before.

JinglyJangly · 02/12/2007 19:05

I was on Cipralex/escitalopram (took Citalopram first but hated it) and found it ok but I was getting terrible acid reflux with it so had to stop taking it & the GP didn't prescribe another AD he just said to see how i go.

My PMT is worse now than ever. Might go back to GP. I have heard Prozac is the best AD but I am trying other methods first - AD's are the last straw.
