Three months ago I went to the doctor with extreme anal pain. I thought I'd had piles and they hadn't cleared, and for a week I was struggling to sit down as the pain was so bad; dull ache, numbish tingling, burning. I was referred on a two week 'cancer' pathway to the colorectal clinic. I was examined within a week, the consultant said it wasn't piles and I was referred for an MRI. That was in June. I got the MRI results a week ago after having to chase the consultant many times as I was worried and being told by her receptionist that "if it had been something serious they would have contacted you". Anyway, in the three months since the MRI the pain has ebbed and flowed. The MRI showed a really small infection that they wouldn't normally treat but the consultant examined me again, said she still couldn't see anything and gave me antibiotics saying she'd 'ring me in a month' to see how it's going. I have now completed the antibiotics and the pain is getting worse again. The appointment I've now received for the follow up call is in November.

Has anyone else experienced this type of pain where it wasn't piles or a fissure?

I’ve had an unexplained pain in my bum for the last 18 months. Started from nowhere. Saw surgery Nurse who diagnosed anal fissure. Treated it but the pain didn’t ease. This was right at the start of the pandemic, so by this point, I thought I had a fissure that wouldn’t heal. Spoke to GP who just referred me to the colorectal department. Saw them last summer, who said no sign of a fissure and so said it might be caused by my back so sent me for MRI. Showed I had 2 lumbar herniated discs, but no relation to the anal pain. 18 months on I’m still none the wiser. Colorectal said it was likely ‘neuropathic’ so am waiting to see neurology now (6 month waiting time). When the pain was at its worst I couldn’t sit at all, especially on soft surfaces like a sofa. The pain was an incessant burning pain, which was made worse when exercising etc. I was also in agony when they examined me and for days afterwards. I have to keep my stools like liquid as if it’s even very slightly formed, it hurts like a bastard! 😖 Hope you get some answers soon!
