Anti biotic induced rash?

Anonymousxo · 27/08/2021 17:50

Has anyone ever experienced a hive like rash popping up and going in random parts of body?
I just finished a course of anti biotics and I've developed what almost looks like hives and keeps coming and going, it's so itchy

Yup. Classic penicillin allergic reaction, I can't have them at all

illuyankas · 27/08/2021 18:37

Yes, my dc had it, but luckily he was in hospital, so the drs treated him with anti histamine.
But I really think you should seek medical advice, not MN.

PinkFootstool · 27/08/2021 18:39

DH had rashes from penicillin-based antibiotics. They took him off them, and he now wears an alert bracelet. All the skin on his hands and feet looked like they had been boiled, they swelled up and the skin all fell off a week or two later (like those chemical foot peel videos you see).

I'm not taking the anti biotic anymore, I finished the course two days ago so I wasn't sure what they could really do except tell me to take anti histamine or use creams

My dc's reaction to the meds was instant, came up quite quickly.
But he also has delayed reaction allergies that comes up later, which isn't life threatening, just have unwanted reaction like diarrhea and hives.

Looks like it isn't anaphylactic reaction, but I think it's worth talking to gp about it, especially it could be a reaction to meds, which you take when your immune system is vulnerable.

I didn't really want to bother them if it was just going to go away on it's own, day 3 now of having this rash 😩

Since you are even thinking about not going to see the dr, I assume the reaction is not severe. Have you taken antihistamine?

Allergy is very complicated. Each person react differently. How you want to deal depend on your reaction.
Normally I think reaction to meds are taken more seriously than say, reaction to certain food(unless it's life threatening, but that's my impression for having a child with multiple allergies)

I wouldn't say it's severe no, annoying yes. It keeps coming in random parts of my body for a few mins then disappears, I've took piriton but I'm not really seeing much of a difference with it tbh

I'm not an expert, so I really urge you to seek medical advice.
It can be possible that course of anti biotics can wipe out good gut bacteria which can cause some unwanted symptoms that you are normally protected against. Your reaction may not even be related to allergic reaction to antibiotics, especially if you are not responding to antihistamine.
I do think the allergic reaction to meds normally happens quite soon after taking them, not week(s) after. But like I said, I am not an expert, it could be possible.

If it's keep coming and going, and disturbing you, no responce to antihistamine, I really think you should seek medical advice, like see a gp.

So I called the nurse, she told me I don't have any symptoms that they would be concerned about and it's very likely it is due to the anti biotics, she said it should pass in a few days time and i should seek advice from a pharmacist

Actually, experienced pharmacist is very good source of information. They know about meds, worth talking too.

Rina66 · 28/08/2021 12:59

Yes, I had this 2 days after I finished a course of penicillin for an infected wisdom tooth. It looked like German Measles, it's so odd that it appears after you stop taking the tablets, that's what threw me.

viques · 28/08/2021 13:02

My dd is allergic to some antibiotics so has to be careful. Her doctor told her that first reactions are often mild, ie a rash , but that subsequent reactions can be more dangerous and dramatic.

sleepy78 · 28/08/2021 13:10

Hello. I have had that before and it is important to get yourself tested so you can avoid it happening again. I had the hives once and didn't connect it to the antibiotics because it was a few days after I stopped taking it. The next time I took them, again 2 days after an 8 day course of medicine, I had hives one evening and then woke up I the night because my throat was swelling up... You need to try to be officially tested to see which types of anti biotic you are allergic to. I know that I cannot take penicillin but I can other take other types.

How long did the rash last for? I've told the nurse but she said it doesn't sound severe so it wouldn't warrant a doctors visit and to see a pharmacist for advice, I'm on day 3 of the rash now

The first time when I had the hives by themselves, they lasted a good few days if I remember rightly. I had time to go and ask the doctor... When I got them the second time they arrived in the evening before the swelling started.

sleepy78 · 28/08/2021 15:08

You will probably be fine this time but you need to know what to avoid because often allergic reactions get worse each time.

TodayImostlyhaveaverucca · 29/08/2021 07:31

Last time dd had a reaction to an antibiotic (not penicillin) it lasted for about ten days. Worse at night, probably partly lack of distraction. GP wasn’t concerned, just, sorry, sometimes that’s how it goes. She’d only had one dose.

Witchesbelazy · 29/08/2021 07:33

Both my children and myself are allergic and their rashes show either at the end or mid course
