What could be causing my cough?

I have a long standing chronic cough (think at least 18 months) that is causing me real problems.

The cough can be worse or better on any given day, accompanied by a lot of throat clearing, and a feeling as though there is something going on in my chest.

I saw the doctor today and she listened to my chest, completely clear, checked my throat and nose, all good, 02 Sat's, pulse, blood pressure all fine.

Gave me meds for relieving any congestion in nose, and any heartburn that could be causing it.

But I'm sitting here coughing so hard I could actually wet myself, and I can physically feel the bubbly wheezy feeling in my chest that's causing it,.and yet there was nothing to hear.

I'm so frustrated. Any idea what it could be?

Has any X-rays, any investigation for asthma?

RandomMess · 26/08/2021 21:19

Or allergies even, when mine are triggered the rhinitis starts and so does the coughing...

ThisIsNotAGloveSong · 26/08/2021 21:23

I don't have any known allergies, nor have I knowingly had asthma. The doctor said she feels there is nothing to worry about (tho clearly I am worried, and sick of it), but if it continues she will send me for an xray.

I have something that sounds similar.
I was convinced it was in the chest at first but all the X-rays and tests kept coming back clear. I was eventually referred to ENT (as I have permanently blocked ears and sinuses) who have diagnosed chronic rhinosinitus (sp?) but the treatment they gave has not cleared it. I’m waiting for a referral to the rhinologist and for allergy tests now. It still feels it’s on my chest but I think it’s the mucus produced in my face constantly draining off which causes that sensation.

It is bloody irritating. You have my sympathies.

Acid reflux can cause a cough.

JuniperBeer · 26/08/2021 21:36

Post nasal drip?
Are you taking any ace inhibitors?

mrsfeatherbottom · 26/08/2021 21:37

I have a chronic cough and my GP said it's usually one of three things:

Post nasal drip
Asthma
Reflux

I have all three so despite lots of medication, still coughing!

Raera · 26/08/2021 21:39

Beconase spray has improved mine a lot!

Mischance · 26/08/2021 21:39

I had adult asthma - fairly mildly and it seems to have settled now. An x-ray showed over-inflated lungs, even though all other things were normal s yours were.

Some blood pressure and cholesterol pills can cause a bad cough.

FinallyHere · 26/08/2021 21:55

Mine is caused by post nasal drip.

While I hate to admit it, I get a 'runny nose' when I eat a lot of sugary things, some of which runs down the back of my throat and lands on the cough reflex.

That starts it but once it starts tbe coughs get worse and worse, so that I feel tightness in my chest and nausea too.

It's especially odd that sugar is the trigger for me. So many cough remedies include sugar.

Hope you find what works for it to all clear up.

My chronic cough is caused by silent reflux and is worse when lying on my right side. It has improved since starting omeprazole.

dizzydizzydizzy · 27/08/2021 06:12

DP has had a cough for years. He recently started taking reflux meds and as soon as he did, the cough disappeared.

ThisIsNotAGloveSong · 27/08/2021 09:40

Thanks everyone. I'm not on any other medication, so it's definitely not that. She has given me omiprazole, so if it's that hopefully that will work. If it's not that hopefully she will investigate further because it's driving me crazy.
