chickenpox- is it true that you can get it twice?

My 5mo DS had chickenpox a few weeks back but a really mild case- only 3 or 4 blisters/scabs, and a handful of red spots. The spots just stopped growing- some red spots never grew into blisters, some blisters just disappeared without scabbing over.

I was glad he had it so mild until someone said he might not have developed immunity as a result.

Anyone any experience of this?

unfortunately if he's had chicken pox so mildly at such a young age he may catch it again at some point.

yes i son had severe chicken pox when he was 1 spent 5 days in hospital and still got it for the 2nd time 7 months later but only mild that time,

my daughter also had it once not as bad as my ds but still loads of spots and she got it again so they have both had it twice

It is true that you can catch it twice but it's rare.

Ds2 had 3 spots when he had it aged 18 months then when he was 9 he had shingles, poor lad.

HeyThereBert · 01/12/2007 11:26

my cousin had it 3 times. and my nana.

i had it once, but then got shingles at 13, 14 and 15 (it gets less each time and finally ran out of steam lol)

Yes, I had it as a 7 year old then again at Uni. My Grandmother even got it again when she was 73! At least it was not Shingles though.

Yes my D got it at 11months very mildly and then again when she was 3. A mindee had it mildly and then went on to have it again less than 6 weeks later- she went on to give it her dad for the 2nd time too!

Thanks for the replies.

I guess we will just have to wait until he is next exposed to it to see what happens.

im one of 5 and all my sisters have had it twice but iv not had it at all!

ivykaty44 · 01/12/2007 22:51

Yes you can get it twice - I had it before I was one and then again as an adult, added to that I was pg the second time.

My dd has also had chicken pox before she was one - yet my gp told me babies don't get it before they are one as they have their mothers immunity. I took her into see him when she got it from her older sister, I asked what was wrong with her and he said she had chicken pox - to which I repied you told me last week she couldnt get it??

So please excuse my not really believing anything anyone ever states about this disease because I have heard so much conflicting stuff about it, from your not infectious on the day the spots come out - to you are still infectious when you have the spots but not on the magical 5th day or the spots crust.
