OK, took dd (8) and ds (5) to GP last Friday as both feeling unwell and got irritating coughs. Both got viral infections. GP gave me a prescription for ds and left it to me as to if we used the prescription. As for dd, GP said she probably had the same thing but was handling it better.

Since then......

Dd has been off school all week having become worse on Sunday afternoon. I have pretty much been giving her regular, alternate doses of calpol and ibuprofen since. Temp goes down to around 98 degrees but if she misses a dose, or goes overnight without, it goes right back up. For example, when she got up this morning it was 104! Her appetite is very low, although I am just about managing to get her to eat twice a day. Am pushing her to drink lots, but this is always an issue.

Ds, I eventually succumbed to the antibiotics on Sunday evening. he went to school Mon-Wed but was peaky. Wednesday afternoon his temp was right up and has been the same as dd since. However, his appetite is better and he is drinking a little more than her.

I know of other children who are struggling through a similar infection and it appears to be very long lasting. But is it OK that I am still giving my children calpol and nurofen constantly after 6 days? On the boxes, it says see GP if not improved after 3 days. But what can they do for what appears to be viral? Should I take them to walk-in clinic to be checked out?

So the abs have not done much for your ds? He is the same as your dd who is not on abs - is that right? Have you got an out of hours surgery you could ring & have a chat with a doc? I think I'd do this and I'm always very reluctant to go to GP! Your dd's temp is going pretty high so I'd check with doc that it's ok to carry on dosing up. It does sound viral if the abs haven't helped you ds.

Or else try NHS Direct. Just to put your mind at rest.

Hope they get better quickly.
