Any opticians on here... need reassurance

So I went for a regular eye test yesterday. I go every 2 years but am about 6 months over due because of Covid etc. Anyway, when they took photos of backs of my eyes, the optician said the optic nerve in left eye looked ‘fuzzy’ , so he’s referred me as urgent to eye unit. Kept asking if I have headaches which I don’t. That eye the short sightedness had also deteriorated much more than other eye by -1.25 vs -0.25. I’m really scared after reading things online. Has anyone got any experience of this and been ok?
Also I haven’t worn my glasses for like 2 years (very bad I know) so am wondering if this has caused the issue. Any opticians know?

No, not wearing glasses would not have caused the issue.
How old are you?
Did you go to the same opticians as you did previously and was everything else normal?

I’m 28, yes always been to same opticians, claimed didn’t have my history though which doesn’t make sense. Well he didn’t say anything else was wrong

Hi OP
I'm no optiician but me, my OH and another family member have had urgent referrals during a routine eye test. Thankfully they turned out not too much of a worry but a heads up for us to be aware and this was a few years ago.
I hope it all pans out well for you and opticians are only ensuring your sight remains good and to be a 100% certain that nothing else needs to be done asap.
Good luck

Try not to worry OP. Optoms are rightfully cautious and through and will refer when necessary. The eye hospital will be in touch in order of priority. I am not an optom, but I used to work for an optom and was responsible for sending over urgent referrals. Sometimes patients that Optoms thought should be seen that day, the hospital were happy to see them within a few days. Good luck.
