Blood test results

Hi all, I'm a bit of a panicker before I start! My OH had a blood test this morning as he keeps getting recurring gout. He had a text around 6pm this evening to say 'Hi... please can you call the reception team to book in a telephone appointment with your GP regarding your blood test results'.

I'm assuming as he has to book a telephone appointment it may not be that serious... as I'm hoping they would call him or get him in straight away if that were the case.

The question is do blood test results come back the same day generally or should we be worried??

TIA!

They can come back the same day. However, if there was something very wrong the GP would have called him personally to speak to him, not sent a text to make an appointment. That said, there must be some issue so I would tell him to make the appointment sooner rather than later, if it was normal they wouldn’t have been in contact so quickly.

They can come back same day. And the discussion could be something relatively minor like low Vit D, slightly (but not worrying) raised cholesterol etc. If he has recurring gout his uric acid may be too high & they can discuss managing that. Get him to make an appointment to ease both your minds.

I had this just this week. I panicked and called doctors and they booked me a telephone appointment for 3 weeks time. I said I can't wait 3 weeks as I'm really anxious now and they said it was just to discus blood results, one was borderline so they would like to do bloods again in a months time. I honestly wouldn't worry, but I know it's hard, I was the same

I don't think they'd text if the results were alarming. I had bad blood test results and my doctor rang me personally 3 hours after the test and asked me to come straight in. There was no messing about with booking an appointment. It sounds more like something is a little out, or another test or medicine will be needed.

I'm a GP, please don't panic. If there was anything super concerning or urgent your GP would have called you directly straight away (for example if there is unexpected serious kidney failure or obvious severe infection somewhere or an unexpected leukaemia type blood picture etc).

And anything not necessarily same day life threateningly urgent but important not to ignore (like confirmation of previously suspected new type 2 diabetes for example) needing addressing within a few days or a week would have given a heads up to contact them at your earliest convenience (but reassuring you not to panic, just get in touch).

This will be a standard message about a likely minor matter like a slightly high cholesterol or something along those lines. Some GPs are super efficient and sometimes results come in the same day and we just want to clear our inbox and take whatever action we need to so it doesn't take up brain space any more but patients often get alarmed.

We ca't win though cos if we don't advise contacting us re: results, then in 3 years people will inevitably complain that we never contacted them to let them know their cholesterol was 0.0001 above the "normal".

Hi all, thanks so much for your reassurance! It's just so worrying as it came in at 17:54 on a Friday evening, the practice closed at 6pm and we now have to wait until Monday. Thanks @Kyliealwayshadthebestdisco for putting my mind at ease, my OH is telling me not to panic but it's so difficult. His mother passed away when she was young due to cancer and for some upsetting rational reason that is always in the back of my head when he has blood results 😩 but I'm glad if it was something serious they would hopefully have gave him a call by now.

We shall wait and see!
