I'm a life long asmatic, inherited from my Mum who got it from her Mum. DS, however, seems to be OK but I think that's because of where we live. When we were in Denmark (he was almost 3 when we left) he was diagnosed as asthmatic after 3 bouts of bronchitus and 1 bout of pneumonia. He started with inhalers at about 1 and half years old. It was dreadful to give him the stuff but he didn't care a hoot and it certainly improved things. We then moved to Italy (hotter and drier) and he improved no end. Now we live in Brazil (hot but not always dry) and there is no sign of it - and even I am much better, going from 3 different inhalers 3 times a day in Denmark to 1 occasionaly now. How old is DD2?

Misdee · 28/11/2007 23:39

i'm not but dh is.

dd1+2 both have asthma. dd1 has had it since she was under a year old. dd2 has had it since earlier this year when she was 4.

I'm an asthmatic and have been since very young. Also, in the last few years I've been getting hayfever for about 7 months a year. So far (touch wood) neither dses have shown any signs (although we worried for a bit that ds1 had it when he was 2, but it turned out to be a succession of unrelated chest infections followed by croup!)

Ds2 shows some sign of the occasional skin allergy (one to a mix of suntan lotions - we weren't aware nursery were using one as well as us, one to a recent mystery substance we think we've traced to a brand of soap flakes nursery were using for an art project) but other than that they seem to have escaped my auto-immune deficiencies, thankfully.

NotQuiteCockney · 29/11/2007 08:16

I am asthmatic, but only since my 30s.

Both kids are fine, I know the symptoms of childhood asthma and watch for them.

NotQuiteCockney · 29/11/2007 08:17

(Oh, and I have an antibiotic allergy, chronic excema, and hayfever, although all mild, like my asthma. No sign of any of these in the DSes.)

brimfull · 29/11/2007 08:23

I am asthamtic
ds was diagnosed at about 2 yrs old

brimfull · 29/11/2007 08:24

dd seems to be fine

VictorianSqualor · 29/11/2007 08:25

I'm asthmatic and like NotQuiteCockney, also have eczema and hayfever.
DD has too, but DS hasn't, I do wonder if DS ebing breastfed is why he hasn't got any of them.

Oenophile · 29/11/2007 08:29

I've been asthmatic (and eczematic) since I was very young. DD2 (18) shows no sign of it and has no other allergies. DD1 (28) has it very mildly and can't sleep on feather pillows or drink sulphited squashes without wheezing, but has never had the very severe attacks I'm prone to on rare occasions. So I'd say from my limited little research group it's not definite that you will pass it on to DCs, but then I'm the only asthmatic I know of in our family so it's possible I have some non-genetic type (if there is such a thing - I'm no medic!)

Ive just been diagnosed this week , both dd1& 2 dont seem to have any signs. Like NQC , I have it mild , and also allergic to many antibiotics , mildly hafeverish and have had excema patches that come and go.

ATortIsForLifeNotJustChristmas · 30/11/2007 21:50

I am asthmatic. So is my dad and one of my Brothers.
So far none of my 4 DC are. Am hoping as i have it very mildly that they will be ok.

Nemo2007 · 30/11/2007 21:51

I was diagnosed at 2yrs old although apparently suffered on and off before. DD1 was officially diagnosed 2mths ago but been suffering from 3mths old.
So far ds and dd2 show no signs.

chankins · 30/11/2007 21:56

I was diagnosed with asthma at 13, and both my sisters and mum have it. DD1 was diagnosed aged 4. My neice at same age. None of the others show any signs yet ! loads of us have eczema and hayfever though .

coppertop · 30/11/2007 21:59

I was diagnosed at 20.

Ds1 was diagnosed at around 2.5yrs.

Ds2 was 3.5yrs.

Hennipenniinapeartree · 01/12/2007 17:55

I was diagnosed with mild asthma when I was 12 or so, I also suffer with bad excema and hayfever. DD1 has inherited hayfever, DD2 escaped completely and poor DD3 has had asthma for the past yr, also has multiple environmental allergies too amongst other health problems all related to allergies.

We have a fantastic family history of allergies on both my mum and dads side, including my aunty who died during an asthma attack and two cousins who are regularly hospitalised with it. My DH side is thankfully free of any allergies.

meep · 01/12/2007 18:09

NQC what are the signs of early childhood asthma - my DH has it and history in his family so want to know what to look out for?
