MRI on the brain how long for the results

Hi

Does anyone know timescales for results
Of an MRI and EEG I had both done yesterday but wasn't told when I would hear, currently scared about a brain tumour but have no follow up booked with the neurologist yet,

My ds had both an eeg and an MRI a couple of years ago. We had results back in a week but we’re told if there was anything sinister we’d hear within 24 hours.

elliejjtiny · 04/08/2021 18:15

It depends who needs to look at the images. Ds2's Mri scan had to be sent to the paediatric neurologists and they wrote a report which took about a month. Ds4 has had a few and his consultant either watches it being done or gets the images emailed to her. She usually tells me the results either before ds comes back to the ward or shortly after.

Depends on how urgent it is

I have a non cancerous brain tumour and i was told my last scan to look if it has grown, will take 10-14 weeks to be reported

It was about 12 weeks in the end

Depends on lots of things really but i presume anything bad would be flagged up sooner rather than later

brainworries · 04/08/2021 19:16

Thanks so much everyone it sounds such a mixed bag, I wish I had asked at the time but didn't think to, I think I'll wait a week or so then chase up and its great I haven't heard today I guess.

I can't believe you had to wait 12 weeks with a known tumour, how horrible for you.

I hope all of you and those with children suffering are on the mend

I had same tests and heard back in 3 days with a call and a bit longer with follow up letter.

Good luck.

emmathedilemma · 04/08/2021 20:41

I’ve usually had a follow up consultation booked within 7-10 days and the report has been back by then.
I’d ring and ask what happens next. Your consultant’s secretary is usually the most helpful person to talk to.

Six weeks for brain MRI

brainworries · 04/08/2021 21:23

Can I ask you all was it a brain tumour or was it all fine? As in some hearing very quickly and others 6 weeks. Thank you, feeling very frightened and feel something is wrong. I have been having debilitating headaches and numbness in my legs.

My DS was diagnosed with a brain tumour - we had a call the next day.

blahblahblah321 · 04/08/2021 21:59

He's fine thanks @brainworries! Had treatment and is now stable

fairyhouse · 04/08/2021 22:01

My DH has regular MRI scans for a benign brain tumour, he gets a call within a week to discuss the results. Thanks

Silkiecats · 04/08/2021 22:02

Ours said 2 weeks though I think if there is anything very serious they call you and its normally within first week often first 48 hours or so.

brainworries · 04/08/2021 22:03

@blahblahblah321

He's fine thanks *@brainworries*! Had treatment and is now stable

The radiographer can see what's going on straightaway on the screen.

This really is a case of no news is good news. Anything untoward will be reported on urgently & contact made within a matter of days.

brainworries · 04/08/2021 22:27

That's good so hopefully no contact this week and then I can relax more!

When i was diagnosed with my brain tumour,
It was 3 weeks after my scan and it had been put on my hospital medical chart that i have access to, without even a doctor ringing me to discuss.
Got an email saying i had some results,
Was the last thing i expected but mine is benign and not pressing on the brain so a little different

Im sure if your were anything to worry about they would contact you asap
Hope you are ok OP

PurplePumpkinDream · 04/08/2021 23:42

When I had a brain MRI I was told 2 weeks but had results within a week, but nothing found so don’t be too alarmed if you do hear early!

dannyrojas · 05/08/2021 07:56

Mine was all clear - it was seizure related.

CharlotteRose90 · 05/08/2021 08:00

I had a head mri and waited 6 weeks for the results . Was an absolute pain

WorriedMillie · 05/08/2021 08:08

It varies so much. If a malignant tumour is suspected from imaging (or a non malignant tumour that has the potential to cause problems, due to size/location), it’d be flagged up immediately and you’d hear soon

If nothing significant is detected (as in the majority of cases), it could be a good while before you hear anything

That said, it varies somewhat from hospital to hospital, IME

Happy for you to PM me, with any questions/wobbles Flowers

Roselilly36 · 05/08/2021 08:18

Handhold OP, it’s a worrying time, try to keep yourself occupied Flowers. I hope you have good news.

careerchangeperhaps · 05/08/2021 08:51

It will entirely depend on the hospital and how well staffed they are but if the referral was specifically made as a suspected cancer / tumour case, it should be very quick.

brainworries · 05/08/2021 13:35

Thank you everyone and for messages of support I've been told today it will be up to 5 weeks so will try and be patient and not chase up until that point. Hopefully hearing nothing
Soon is still positive
