Ds complaining his eye hurts who do I go and see?

Bit of a silly question really. Ds is 2.6 years and for the last couple of days keeps rubbing his eye and saying it hurts. I have checked to make sure there is nothing in it. He is ok in general just every so often rubs his eye and says it hurts.

Do I take him to the dr's or an optician?

both can check if his eye is scratched but I would start with the doc to make sure he doesn't have an infection
