Norovirus in baby

Hi, my little boy (11 months) has norovirus/ a sickness and diarrhoea bug at the moment. He was sick multiple times on Wednesday with diarrhoea started on Thursday. Our GP checked him over and checked he wasn't dehydrated yesterday and said he was ok but he's been sick again today and had some loose nappies again.

I've been desperately trying to get water to him constantly and he's wanted the odd snack like a melty puff but not had any milk since Wed. He was still crawling and cruising today and mostly happy so generally seems to be perking up but I weighed him tonight and he's 0.7kg less than he weighed 3 weeks ago so must've lost quite a bit of weight.

I wondering at what point I should be getting worried and if anyone had any experiences on how long this usually lasts in babies. If your babies have lost weight during illness, has their weight jumped up again once better?

Is he refusing milk?
Are you offering food and milk?
Carb rich foods are supposed to be good.

Hi @dementedpixie yes constantly offering milk and food, completely refusing all milk, I've tried all different cups/bottles/temperature/ everything I can think of. I've been offering all sorts of food, but the ones he's taken the odd bite out of have tended to be carbs or fruit.

Have you tried dioralyte?
No milk or food since Wednesday I’d be very worried and likely in a&e.

@OnlyFoolsnMothers yeah GP has given us dioralyte. Thanks I didn't know if I was overreacting after the GP told me he was fine and just get lots of water in, he's had some bites of food but very little so was starting to panic more 😭.

I sympathise, my LO had it for a day...repeated vomiting on the hottest day of the yr, chucked up straight after a breastfeed- low and behold started feeding and keeping it down during the a&e wait! If you don’t think requires a&e keep an eye out for the signs of dehydration:
Lack of saliva in the mouth
Withdrawn eyes
Sunken fontanel

Keep up fluids. Doesnt matter so much about food

Milk can aggravate the stomach after a bug .

dementedpixie · 24/07/2021 21:12

You are supposed to continue with milk feeds (if they will take it)

Yes the guidance changed re milk and if they want it, give it.

Other good one is making ice lollies. I used the fruit pouches or even just ice. They seem to like those. Dd had a similar bug, thought we were improving then sick again. Hard going.
