Dressing on burn Warning photo

I got a friction burn on both legs caused by a very long dog lead wrapped around my legs. Wounds have got infected and had to have them dressed yesterday at the Drs surgery. Am on antibiotics for a week. I have to go back on Thursday and Monday to have the dressings changed.

My question is that lots of gunk showing through the dressing (sorry for tmi). Is this ok to wait until Thirsday? I suspect it is but conscious of the heat and gunk sitting in the wounds.

Do you think it's ok to wait until Thirsday or does it need redressing before then?

I would call for advice ! It looks pretty bad, and this heat won't be helping. I personally wouldn't wana leave that the way it is, a fresh dressing will be best

Practice nurse here. So long as the discharge doesn't take up more than 3/4 of the dressing you're ok. If there is any redness/swelling/increased pain then go back earlier. Burns can exude a lot of serous fluid. Try not to panic!
Hope you're better soon.

Do you have any dressings so you could do it yourself ? I had an op and my partner packed and dressed my open wound for me, the surgeon even complimented his work 😆

@debka thank you. Feet are so swollen but think that's due to heat as much as anything else. Skin stretching is making the dressing hurt and hurting the wounds 🙁

depends on the kind of dressing as well.
the alginate/gel types are meant to stay on.
ring for advice.
poor you, I hope it heals well!

I would wait until Thursday. Ouch, you poor thing.

minmooch · 20/07/2021 15:00

@elsaesmeralda the nurse wouldn't give me any clean dressings. She told me she would change on Thursday and Monday and only then assess if she would then let me do it.

That’s fine. That’s what that dressing is designed to do, soak up lots of exudate and prevent the dressing sticking to the wound.

Old retired nurse. Looks okay. I think Thursday would be fine.

minmooch · 20/07/2021 18:24

Thank you everyone. I feel confident leaving it until Thursday, unless of course it gets worse.

Just asked medic DS. He thinks it looks fine. Get your feet up at every opportunity, drink plenty.
