Parathyroid gland removal

Anyone on here had a parathyroid gland removed to help lower high blood calcium levels? And if so, was your voice affected? I’ve been told that there is a 6% chance of damaging a nerve which will affect my vocal cords and at worst I will spend the rest of my life with no more than a whisper for a voice. I sing in a choir (amateur admittedly) and the thought of never being able to sing again is devastating.

Hi @Lansonmaid, not me personally but I know someone who had it done a few years ago and her voice is normal ☺️

My mum had this done about 20 years ago and did not affect her voice at all.

I had mine removed about a month ago. Voice was a tad scratchy for a couple but no issues at all now, which, in my case means I still sound like a bag of cats when singing Grin

I had parathyroid gland removal a few years ago, it didn't affect my voice. Like many things, the more often the surgeon does that particular operation, the lower the risk. I would ask them whether this is an operation they do regularly.

I had one removed in 2018 and it didn't affect my voice at all. There's a Facebook group - Hyperparathyroid Action 4 Change where people discuss their experiences with the op.

Sunbird24 · 14/07/2021 20:34

I had one removed in 2028 as well, also a member of the group @theicemaidenismelting mentioned. No impact on my voice either. Come and join the group, so much useful info about surgery and supplements!

*2018 (not a time traveller!)

Thanks everyone, I will go back to the surgeon and ask the pokey question about how many he carries out in a year. And I’ll look at the Facebook group too

These are the numbers from 2019 if that helps at all

I had mine removed 2012, voice was fine and felt so much better immediately after feeling under the weather for about a year. Good luck.

No, no side effects at all from the operation. Just feel so much better! Good luck OP.
