do you mean free weights or machines?

HiddenIcon · 25/11/2007 08:41

eww yuck.

I started going and need to go back. I use all the machines. Its hard-work!!

zippitippitoes · 25/11/2007 08:42

machines but i'm just curious who actually goes to a gym

and was going to be nosier and wonder what weights people are on on different machines and what they do and why

OP posts:
HiddenIcon · 25/11/2007 08:42

I mean the machine with weights on them. You move the little pin thing and it thingies your weights. [thingies???]

zippitippitoes · 25/11/2007 08:42

i'm curious what people do who aren't fat burning

OP posts:
zippitippitoes · 25/11/2007 08:43

I used to, pre kids. Was a member of a gym and went regularly after work and at weekends. At one time DH and I followed the Body for Life programme which is fairly heavily focused on using weights to build lean muscle and reduce fat - was great, for about six months we both looked really HOT.

Now I wonder vaguely how on earth people find time to exercise (and can afford gym membership - even our local authority gym is 50 quid a month) and also what they do with their kids while they are doing it. Any tips for how to make regular exercise a reality would be most welcome.

HiddenIcon · 25/11/2007 08:44

Oh there are LOTS!!

Right let me think.

You have the biceps one, the one for your back, one for your legs, one for your thighs [thats the one where you push 2 big pads together].

I am useless!

HiddenIcon · 25/11/2007 08:45

I also walk lots. I have noticed the weight creeping on over the past few weeks tbh.

I need to go back. You get such a buzz when you come out. Tis like being high!

mrsmalumbas · 25/11/2007 08:47

Ah zippitoes you see the theory is that using weights to build muscle means you raise your metabolism and therefore need to do less of the boring cardio stuff. It also improves your muscle tone and the actual shape of your body which no amount of cardio can really do. When I was doing it regularly I go a real kick out of working hard on the weights to improve my technique and seeing my muscles get really firm and shaped. Plus there is the endorphin rush too. Sighs. The only endorphin rush I get these days is getting up to make a cup of tea.

HiddenIcon · 25/11/2007 08:50

i used to - but now i have dd i don't have a gym membership (when would i use it????) - but i do exercise around 4 or 5 times a week. Buggyfit once a week in my local park, plus 2 mornings at weekends when dp is at home, then either once more with dd in the buggy (for a jog/powerwalking session) or when she is asleep. I don't use machines now obviously but i do 3x resistance sessions a week - once at Buggyfit then i try to fit in 2 more, using my own bodyweight (squats, lunges, dips, pressups) and resistance bands, plus some handweights. I do cardio/resistance circuits which i can do in my frontroom, a 30 minute session with bursts of cardio (starjumps, skipping, squatthrusts, burpees) and resistance exercises. I maintain that if there is a will there is a way!!!!!! But then i exercised regularly before dd - i think it would be hard to get the motivation to do this much if i'd never exercised before. It has kept me sane since having dd ......that and red wine!

countryhousehotel · 25/11/2007 08:56

oh - that wasn't meant to sound show offy - just trying to explain how i manage to fit exercise in with dd who is 16 months old, and no gym membership!

HiddenIcon · 25/11/2007 08:58

zippitippitoes · 25/11/2007 08:58

Its really difficult to get motived.

DH is a gym addict. He lost his job a few motnhs back and lots all motivation. He keeps trying to go back [gym] but is still having problems.

Let us know how you go. I love swimming, great exercise.

HiddenIcon · 25/11/2007 09:03

obviously

not to mentioned you may bump into nice fit stranger !!

DrNortherner · 25/11/2007 09:16

Do you have a programme Zippi?

I am a gym member and don't need to lose weight. I do a boxacise class once a week and try to fit in 3 gym sessions on top of that. I start with 25 - 30 mins jogging on treadmill, 8 mins on cross trainer, then that thing for the thoghs where you push 2 pads together (only on 15kg), then another couple of machines follwed by 5 mins on stepper thing (except it's like a roller blading stepper). Then I go to the Kinesis room (resistance pully system) ands do 10 mins in there followed by 3 x 12 squats with a fit ball in my lower back against teh wall then 3 x 2 sit ups wit my legs on a fit ball.

Then stretch off.

I love it, but agree fitting it in and finding the time can be difficult sometimes.

TheBlonde · 25/11/2007 10:10

I'm not really doing much with weights at the moment, just doing the leg machines
Pre kids I used to do them all

mrsmalumbas - it is hugely expensive but I am not motivated to work out at home so I pay a lot for my membership plus the kids plus creche fees

brimfull · 25/11/2007 10:15

I go to body pump classes at the gym

They are brilliant .

I need the discipline of a teacher telling me what to do for an hour rather than the gym.

IT's great fun.

shrooms · 25/11/2007 13:09

I do 1-2 weight sessions a week on top of the cardio, speed and circuit training which is usually 8 sessions a week (competitive running) but don't enjoy that as much as the running and cross training.
I do 2 sets of 15 reps (at the highest weight I can manage for 15 reps) on each machine and some lunges and squats plus bicep curls. It definately does give quicker results for strength and tone if you do each exercise quite hard rather than just sitting there thinking that slow and easy will be enough.

zippitippitoes · 25/11/2007 13:44

well I have my own programme

I do 10 mins on a bike set at no 5 hate this to tell the truth do about 65 rpms

then i do 10 mins on the treadmill on 4.9 k on 19 slope

then i do leg curls and the op[osiute of leg curls on a mchine where i think it is on about 35kg

I do 2x8 on each of those

then i do the abductor and adductor that is the machines that drnortherner was talking about except i do 50 on each of those on 35kgs

(these are apparently sex muscles ie inner and outer thigh lol)

then i do the puash the seat backwards machine not sure what it is called but its another leg one and sometimes i do it and sometimes i don't

chin and dip i have on 40kg and do er can't remember 20? chins and 10 dips not been doing this one long so just deciding what to do

then i do the push up lift one for arms on i think 35kg 2x8

then usually the seated row for arms on 20kg and do about 8

then i do treadmill for 15 mins

and tyhen i swim 60 lengths

the idea is to go three times a week but i am really busy at the mo

if anyone is going to the xmas do we can compare muscles lol ..i do actually have the at the top of my arms where bingo wings are supposed to be and in my thighs for aforementioned sex
