D&V, day four but just dreadful.

Hello,

I'm trying to find any tips from people who have experienced it and some sensible feedback re: how best to keep myself home and preserve breastfeeding.

I've had D&V since Thursday. Thankfully the V tailed off Saturday morning but the D is just a horror show. I'm taking on fluid but cannot eat and I'm down by 4.5kg since Wednesday (plenty to spare but sadly it's liable to be precious water rather than fat).

I stopped peeing and my baby became fussy and unsatisfied breastfeeding and absolutely gulped formula down on Friday afternoon which gave me a boot into being better about getting fluid on board.

Saturday I thought I'd beaten it, peeing again, baby happy on the breast and I even managed some fruit and toast at teatime.

However overnight I lost control of my bowels every time I fell asleep. Didn't even wake when it happened. Blush

This morning I'm sucking down as much fluid as I can, I have dioralyte and loperamide but I feel just dreadful.

My baby is 8 months old and it is important to me to breastfeed particularly with this nasty bug I want her to be getting some protection.

Is this the darkest before the dawn? Do gastro type bugs have a last hurrah or do they tail off more gradually? Any red flags to monitor for? Any tips on small foods I can try which have a positive impact?

NHS says not to worry until it's been a week. Am I just being precious?

I'm saying this as an ardent breastfeeder -- let your baby suckle for comfort at least from you, but have some formula, too. She's already had some antibodies from you & you need to keep your fluid & electrolyte levels up.

Are you still weeing normally?

Are you having little sip of water-electrolye solution every 5 minutes?

Thanks @yeOldeTrout oh she's semi permanently attached as ever Grin & offering formula as needed. Things do seem much better in terms of milk today.
I'm managing fairly decent (given circumstances) volumes of fluid, I'm probably at 1l so far today. But the output is huge. Peeing small amounts today but regularly.

You poor thing. Be kind to yourself and eat whatever you think you can keep down (bananas, toast, apples etc). Well done - you are doing an amazing job!

Most fruits are going to help loose stools tbh.

Any other food you fancy and yes keep up the fluids.

You poor thing Thanks

I would try to eat carbs or total junk but maybe that’s just me. I occasionally suffer badly from irritable bowel and when it’s really bad, I stay away from the good stuff and do white bread, crackers, chocolate, crisps, oven chips, biscuits etc. Probably not the best solution but it won’t hurt in the short term, I guess. Disclaimer…I’m not a dietitian but I’ve just worked this out over the years.
Hope you feel better soon.
