Hi there,
I have PCOS and since reading a book about it, I have started to understand things about my life that they didn't seem right at the time. I was never thin and my skin was always, still is very oily. Lately my mood swings are awful and, yes the vitamine 6 complex is helping, but I hate having to depend on it. I don't want to take any more medicaments for PCOS.
I suppose I just want to chat to other women who live with this condition. The only one I know of is Posh Spice and, lets face, we don't have much in common.
Thanks.

My sister has just been diagnosed with POCS, seeing the doc next week for advice. She is 21, so I will be watching this thread

ShrinkingViolet · 23/11/2007 12:45

have a look at Verity which is a charity to support women with PCOS.

EmmaJW1976 · 23/11/2007 12:47

sfxmum · 23/11/2007 12:51

hi I do have known for many years
like it has been said low GI type diet and regular exercise, watch out for depression.

verity are very good and helpful

MamaMaiasaura · 23/11/2007 12:59

I have known for about 10 years. Mainly affects cycle. Need to watch what you eat in general and excercise regularly. Verity site has lots of ingo. I can make concieving more difficult, but not impossible. Very very common. The better your bmi the less severe the symptoms ime.

MamaMaiasaura · 23/11/2007 13:00

the prescribe metformin to help with side effects too.

AttilaTheMeerkat · 23/11/2007 14:15

I was diagnosed with PCOS several years ago based on my bloodwork and irregular periods. Have always had such problems.

Low GI/GL type diet plan (not low carb) can be helpful as well as trying to remain within the correct weight range for your height.

The charity Verity are very helpful - their web address is www.verity-pcos.org.uk.

EmmaJW1976 · 23/11/2007 14:15

I am on Metformin now. Have been dieting religiously for two years but after a week on Metformin have lost 7 lb

Mainly due to loss of appetite.

I get greasy hair, am hairier, missed periods and weight all around belly area - lovely!

Apparently IF I can lose weight then symptoms will decrease.

Regards getting pg, I have two children with no probs

Oh, and you can get Vaniqa cream on prescription which stops the hairs growing with regular use on face, etc.

potxola · 23/11/2007 14:36

Many thanks to all of you.
I do have a ds, but I have had 3 missc.
When I worked outside the house and I was more active my weight was more or less under control. Now being at home, it has become a problem, especially around the belly like you Enma. That has always make very difficult shopping for everyday trousers.I end up wearing big jumpers.
I need to go now. I will be back later

I found I had PCOS when I started trying to conceive and all that happened was that I got a lot spottier.

After having DD (who is now 8) with the help of clomid, I was first put on Dianette which did help with symptoms but I realised it was starting to make me depressed. I was switched to Marvelon (after tests that I wasn't susceptible to blood clotting problems) and really, I don't have any problems now. [Dianette and Marvelon are both types of oral contraceptive btw so not much use if you are TTC!]

potxola · 23/11/2007 22:20

Yes EmsMum, I was put on Marvelon years ago and it made me really moody and then I found a great doctor who put me on Dianette to treat my then strong acne. Years later I found out I had PCOS. I don't have acne now.

I was on Dianette early on too but I think recently this drug had some serious health warnings.

DungunGirl · 27/11/2007 21:37

hi all...I have suspected PCOS. Am going to have more blood work done next week to try and confirm.

Found out as am TTC no.2 but has not happened. Also I have been gaining weight non-stop even though my diet or lifestyle is in fact healthier and more active than before I had my first child!!!

Will be watching this thread for tips on how to live with PCOS if indeed it is confirmed!
