Advice on sleeping while taking prednisolone for asthma

PutneyHill · 27/06/2021 18:07

I have been prescribed Prednisolone for out of control asthma but today I cut back in the hope I would just steal one night's sleep. Naturally my breathlessness is back but I literally don't sleep a wink on this medication - I'm at a loss of what to do as I'm just so deliriously bone achingly tired, yet without them I'm not going to breathe.
How to long term steroid users bloody sleep? Please advice as my asthma is now so severe my prescription will probably be extended Sad

Do you take it first thing in the morning?

Sirzy · 27/06/2021 18:11

Taking it first thing is the key

toomuchfaster · 27/06/2021 18:11

Take all tablets as a single dose at breakfast time. Eg 30 mg =6x5mg tablets as single dose in the morning.

kimlo · 27/06/2021 18:12

take then as early as possible.

I can't help but I was the same. Totally wired no matter what time of day I took it, but too physically ill to do anything!

FourTeaFallOut · 27/06/2021 18:19

Long term users don't usually have the same dosage op. You will be exhausted if you are struggling to sleep and breathe. Rest as much as you can, throughout the day, even if you are not sleeping and take your meds properly. I always take steroids as early as possible and not on an empty stomach. Sleep as high as you can on as many pillows as you can tolerate.

PutneyHill · 27/06/2021 18:19

Yes I take them first thing with breakfast.

I take 5mg (half a 10mg tablet) of Phenergan very early in the evening, when I'm on prednisolone. Use a pill cutter.

Hax · 28/06/2021 16:37

I take it long term but only 5mg. I imagine you have been given a few days worth? I have taken large doses of dexamethasone so I know the wired all night feeling.
If I have to take more than 5 mg I get up early, have a quick breakfast and then take with a glass of milk.

Long term steroid users - do you take omeprozole or other PPI?

RickiTarr · 28/06/2021 16:42

I had a slightly histrionic sleep deprived thread about this last week. It’s such a WIRED kind of tired isn’t it?

Luckily I get 8 diazepam a month for “as and when” use for my spinal problem (as a muscle relaxant). So eventually a couple of those were warranted.

I’d try a drowsy ant histamine such as PP suggests, or even ask for a prescribed mild sleeping tablet to accompany your rescue pack prescription.

I have to do this occasionally and find that melatonin tablets help at night. You can buy them online - I use chronodorm

LoveFall · 28/06/2021 17:06

I have taken up to 60 mg a day for a few days for ulcerative colitis. I get totally wired and can't sleep.

Make sure you take them in the morning. I am prescribed propranolol to help with the trembling and generally heightened anxiety feeling I get. I have taken immovane also short term. It helps a bit.

Try to rest throughout the day in short spurts. Lying quickly is rest too.

I am sorry you have to take prednisone, the devil's tic tacs. But it really works so is worth it.

PutneyHill · 28/06/2021 18:31

Initially the wired feeling was a slight novelty because I got so much work and cleaning done but now I'm in weepy, not feeling mentality well mode from the sheer lack of sleep.
I've just ordered some melatonin so I'll see how I get in with that. I've just take an antihistamine too.

Not to be too miserable, but to warn you; I’ve found it gets worse with each successive pack I’ve been prescribed too. No idea what the mechanism behind that is. It could be that I’ve just been more tired generally but that’s not how it felt.
