Anyone got pregnant just after rubella booster?

We want to TTC. I've also found out my rubella immunity is low so I'm going for a booster. I have been told I'll have to wait 3 months after the booster before TTC which I'm a bit annoyed about.

Obviously, I'm not planning on compromising the health of any potential unborn baby just because I'm impatient, but I was just curious about what would happen if I did get pregnant in those three months?

Would the live rubella vaccine really stay in my system 3 months?

Does anyone know?

I don't know either, but maybe it could take that long for it to kick into your immunity so for the first 3 months you wouldn't be covered, therefor, worth the wait to be on the safe side.

Hi Meid - don't know for sure, but I had my immunity checked and asked the same question in case I needed the booster. I think (THINK) it's because the vaccine has a bit of the virus in it so if you did get pg within that time it's possible this might affect the baby in the same way as if you'd caught rubella whilst pg...

I had the same problem (borderline immunity) and so had to have a booster, was also warned re the 3 month wait....
GP explained that it would be very dangerous to fall pregnant within that time, in fact quite frightened me as she said if I did, would almost certainly have to abort as it would be horribly deformed - her words not mine .
I think it's best to have a word with your gp/nurse to find out for sure, hopefully you won't get one like mine....

Don't even consider it! The baby probably wouldn't be horribly deformed but you would run a very high risk of the baby being autistic or blind or deaf. In a couple of (not very high powered but still relevant) studies which looked at rubella vaccine administration during pregnancy and immediately postpartum about 80% of the children developed autism. Natural rubella infection when pregnant is known to have the potential to cause autism. And believe me autism is not fun.

Misty, your GPs words are ringing round in my head now. I've been scared into definitely sticking to the three months! It just seems a long time to have the live vaccine in your body, but I'm no doctor so I won't argue it and take the risk.

I will ask my nurse for more info though when I have the booster on Monday.

Thank you Jimjams. Just seen your response. My mind is definitely made up. I'm not taking any chances, I'll definitely wait the 3 months maybe longer.

I've spent the last 18 months trying to persuade DH to try for a baby what difference will another few months make!
