Anyone had Clarithromycin?

I’ve just been prescribed Clarithromycin 500mg 2x a day for 7 days and I’m really struggling after the first dose. Had a horrible taste in my mouth, stomach ache, felt horrible, all this within 1-2hours of taking it

I also had some tinitus like noise for 5 seconds or so, googled it and apparently it causes hearing loss?? I’m so stressed I don’t want to ruin my hearing too, since reading it my ears feel funny but I can’t tell if that’s just the anxiety too playing with my head. 😩

Anyone have any advice?

I had it a couple of years ago and I got stomach pains but that was all.
Maybe you can ask if there’s an alternative if you don’t get in with it.

I had awful abdominal cramps. Ring 111 and ask to swap it for something else, maybe Azithromycin which is gentle on tummy.

Did either of you have any hearing issues? :)

Had it a few times. Tastes utterly repulsive but I haven’t had hearing problems. Hope you feel better soon.

My son was prescribed it earlier this year. We tried liquid and tablet form and he literally couldn’t stomach them. I had to hide it in food in the end. It did the trick but absolutely foul stuff

I've taken it a few times. I have to take it with a full meal otherwise I get horrendous stomach cramps. I've never had any hearing issues with it.

Made me full on vomit a couple of hours after taking it

Yes a few weeks ago and it made me feel so poorly. I couldn't sleep from the taste in my mouth. I rang my GP and they swapped me to Doxycycline which was much better.
Are you allergic to penicillin?

I’ve had it loads, got tinnitus, wore off, was fine.

I’m being treated for Mycoplasma so I think there’s no alternative?

My main worry is the Hearing damage :( thanks so much everyone for your replies it means so much

Definitely call your gp in the morning, you'd be amazed what alternatives they know if. Don't suffer in silence

I’m on the same antibiotic and dose right now, for Cellulitis. Clarithromycin is one of the few antibiotics I can take (I can’t take penicillin) and I’ve never had any issues. I think Erythromycin or Azithromycin are alternatives for Mycoplasma infections? Though not sure if they have similar side effects.

Hi all, the second does I tolerated a lot better by eating a full meal before and drinking a full bottle of water once I had it :) good news is I can already feel the effect of the antibiotics on my infection after 2 doses. I’ll just cope for another 6 days thanks all!!! :)
