DH swollen eyes Not an allergy - help?

vestastilly · 16/06/2021 12:49

Can anyone give me any ideas or experiences please about what could be wrong with DH. He has spoken to the Dr who is seeing him on Monday for bloods and blood pressure. The doctor seems to think that it is ‘stress’ but DH is not stressed and is clearly feeling unwell. He has lots of aches and pains and general tiredness but the main visible symptom is his eyes which are varying degrees of swollen every day to the point where he looks like he is having an allergic reaction ! His eyes are not red itchy or weepy and I have also checked him for fluid retention so not this. I know that I need to wait for bloods to be done but feel I need a back up plan if nothing is found.

No idea, but, I’d book an appointment with an optometrist or ophthalmologist tbh.

vestastilly · 16/06/2021 12:59

Yes I am encouraging him to do this as welk

How do you know it’s not hayfever?

WetWeekends · 16/06/2021 13:02

That was my thought, how do you know it isn’t an allergic reaction? I agree an optician might be worth getting an opinion from.

Landslidelife · 16/06/2021 13:08

I had the same symptoms when I had shingles in my eye (I had no rash on my face just in my eye). I was left with scarring in my eye so now need glasses and chronic pain the sooner it gets treated the better the outcome. I'd be tempted to go to emergency Eye clinic /opticians to get them to look.

I went through a phase over 4mths where I would wake up or during the day and my face would be swollen, usually my lips and eyes.

I went through all the usuals, food I had eaten, change of washing powder etc. Antihistamines were prescribed but they didn't do much, allergy tests at the hospital showed what I already knew.
Then one day it just stopped and I haven't had a flare up in over a year. Completely random and I will never know what caused it and the Dr's didn't really have a clue either.

Does he have any other symptoms or just the eyes? Could thyroid and Grave's disease be a possibility?

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 20/06/2021 21:43

My daughter had a swollen face when she had a kidney infection.

Hax · 20/06/2021 21:46

Has he tried antihistamines? If they help it would point towards it being allergy.

Numnumcookie · 23/06/2021 08:57

Could be thyroid problems, viral infection (glandular fever etc) or more urgently periorbital cellulitis (which I've had before and requires antibiotics to stop it getting a lot worse!) I think you should get him to an opticians.

Sorry for the late update. All the blood tests came back negative and the doctor was really unhelpful. Husband still has swollen eyes which are now streaming and painful at times. I have encouraged him to have an eye test once we are back from holiday in hope that an optometrist will be able to see what is wrong

Has he been taking strong antihistamines? They won’t do any harm if it isn’t hayfever related but will help if it is. Fexofenadine 180mg from the Gp is a good idea to try - the ones you can buy barely touch the sides if you have serious allergies. I think going to see an optician is a good idea.

Ivy48 · 15/07/2021 07:28

Ask for a second opinion. Family friend recently had swollen eyes and the dr dismissed it, got worse and went to a&e after 111s advice and he had shingles in his eye and could have possible lost his vision if left. Seek help elsewhere urgently!

Get a PCR test done if not done so already x

toastantea · 15/07/2021 07:41

Blepharitis?

I don't think a covid test is going to be mush help a month after it started

vestastilly · 15/07/2021 11:48

Thanks guys - eye test will be booked ASAP. We are lateral flow testing regularly so not COVID related.
