Sertraline advice

babymummy96 · 25/05/2021 13:09

Hi,

I need some advice from anyone who takes sertraline please!

I have been prescribed 50mg today and just want to know when to take it. I have stupidly googled whether it can cause insomnia (I struggle with sleeping) and people are saying when they take it before bed they cannot sleep!

Can I get some positive stories please? I am basically addicted to Nytol at this point and need to stop, I don't want something else causing me to take it.

Thanks!

My GP said you're supposed to take it in the morning

IsThePopeCatholic · 25/05/2021 13:17

I take mine in the morning.

Hi, I started on 50mg in January and take it on a morning when I get up as I've also read it can affect sleeping.

It started working for me after about 4-6 weeks and now I feel great, sleeping much better than I ever did and seem so much calmer. I hope you get the same benefit but if it doesnt work for you speak to your GP as there are other things they can give you :)

UKhun · 25/05/2021 13:43

I'm a bit surprised you are starting straight on 50mg! But yes mornings. And take after food the first few times as it can cause nausea.

summersolstice43 · 25/05/2021 13:51

I started straight on 50mg too, its the normal dose for anxiety

Harribo86 · 25/05/2021 15:40

Hi All

I was prescribed this yesterday, and I just wanted to get it started (after putting it off for so many years), so I stupidly took it at 3pm.

I am thinking I can start taking it a little earlier each day to get it to the morning as that's my preference.

Out if interest hows everyones experience so far? I have a super dry mouth, and I'd say I cry and feel panicky 80% of the day...but this has been my life over the last month or so, so my bigger fear is how much worse will it be over the next few weeks.

RocioMartinez · 25/05/2021 16:12

I take it in the morning and also started on 50mg. It takes a few weeks to work but it certainly worked for me.

Wise words from another similar thread - when you feel like you can come off it you know it is working.

TheRealMrsMorningstar · 25/05/2021 17:21

I take (normally) at night as it zombie-fies me in the first few weeks. I have moved to morning now though as I sing like taking the same time as having a drink and sometimes like a gin or wine. I personally don't get insomnia from it (the opposite in early days).

LapinR0se · 25/05/2021 19:47

It’s not like the contraceptive pill where you need to take it at precisely the same time each day. If you took it at 3pm today, you can just go straight for the morning tomorrow. And then definitely stick to the morning. Brush teeth, take sertraline.

babymummy96 · 25/05/2021 20:11

Thanks everyone. Nervous to start as don't want it to affect my sleep!

I am usually up at 6am anyway so will take first thing!

Hope it works, recently have been waking up with a very heavy feeling on my chest and most mornings I wake up and just cry to myself. I've had anxiety for years but I've just ignored it and pushed it to the side but it's got so much worse since I had my baby! Can't carry on like this... fingers crossed for me!

Sometimes it feels worse before it feels better. You might have a bumpy few days but stick with it as then the benefits will kick in.

babymummy96 · 25/05/2021 20:41

Can I ask, does anyone that takes it in the morning struggle with sleep?

Hi I take sertraline at 7.30am and it doesn't affect my sleep at all.

I started with a half dose for a week and I did find it took me longer to get to sleep for the first couple of days, but not after that.

I haven't really had any side affects at all, just maybe a slight loss of appetite.

I've been taking it around 5 weeks now and it has helped my anxiety so much, I feel so much better.

I hope it helps you.

I've heard this a lot. When you say worse... would you say more anxious/depressed etc? I had an awful dry mouth today - not sure if it's related.

I sort of feel like now I've taken two in sort of sitting waiting for some sort of melt down (as in worse than the current ones I've been having?

Hyacinth88 · 25/05/2021 22:37

I started son 50mg and took initially at night to avoid nausea and couldn't sleep at all.
I switched to am and still have insomnia but i can get to sleep than I waken around 4am.

Morning, and started on 50mg too. Rough couple of weeks and then much better.

One word of warning, it's often talked about on here but people often still fall could of it:

Always take Sertraline with lots of water and ideally standing up. If you take it dry or take it and then lie down, it tends to get stuck in your throat and cause the worst heartburn-like pain for hours you'll ever imagine. You'll only ever do it once, but better none!

Luckingfovely · 25/05/2021 22:43

*fall foul of it

Ohh ok, that is good to know! Thank you.

I dont know if it's placebo, but I actually feel a little better today (only taken 3 50mg so far). I feel i'm having less anxiety - which I usually get in the form of chest pain and a horrid feeling of fear in my stomach. And the feelings get worse and worse until I break and cry.

But I don't know if it's in my head, either way i'll take it because I finally feel like things are going to get better.

Luckingfovely · 27/05/2021 21:50

@babymummy96 and @Harribo86 I hope you're both doing okay

I feel ok-ish. I'm day 6 and not had many side effects, although I don't have much of an appetite.

I find mornings are the worst. I think I just overthink in the night and when I wake up I drive myself into a panic so this morning ended up in a panicky crying state. Sad

I'm just hoping I do feel less anxious in a few weeks when they start kicking in, it's the chest pain that I hate the most with my anxiety!
