DS has a lump on his head where his fontanelle used to be

I've always been a bit concerned about the shape of DS2's head. It's always been quite long rather than round and his fontanelle appeared to close quite early. Now he has a hard lump where the fontanelle used to be and his head is still quite long.
He also seems to have a sort of band from ear to ear, over the top of his skull, that doesn't seem to grow like the rest of his head, so the forehead and back bulge a bit.
I'm going to take him to the doc on Monday as I've been doing internet research and I've found all kinds of information which has really worried me.
Does anyone else's DC have a lump on their head too? I'm just looking for reassurance that DS hasn't got some horrible condition that might require surgery and that others have it too. Developmentally he's perfectly normal, even quite bright, but his head and face have always been small.
I'm now wishing I'd taken him to the doc sooner.

The band you describe sounds normal its where the back two plates of the skull fuse with the front two plates, all heads are like this although some are more noticable than others.
I cant help with the lump where the fontanelle was though although there are huge differences in anatomy and it will continue to change as he grows.

It is hard to know what's normal when most people have hair covering their skulls.
You're probably right about the band, it's most likely normal.
I'm still concerned about the lump though. I've never seen that before.

The lump could be a dermoid cyst. They are totally benign and are common anywhere in midline. My DD has one very close to her fontanelle, and it feels like a hard (bone hard) pointy egg, as if she has banged it. The bit you can feel on her head is about marble sized. If they suspect a dermoid they may xray just to check it sits over the skull like 99.9% of them do, and they would remove it for cosmetic issues.
The band bit sounds normal,
