Osteopenia

Hi, I have just been diagnosed as having osteopenia. I am unfit and a bit overweight, so I am going to use this a necessary push to start getting fitter. Has anyone any tips on what the best types of exercises would be? I know that they need to be weight-bearing. Any good online exercise videos that you can recommend?

Have you checked your vitamin D levels?

How old are you? Are you taking calcium? (Calcichew?)
Have you had a bone density scan?
Osteopenia generally means low bone density but not yet osteoporosis - is there a family history of osteoporosis?
Also get your hyperparathyroid hormones / serum calcium checked.
And pilates will be great and doable (if you struggle with exercise like me!)
Xx

I am 57. Yes, this was diagnosed on a dexa scan. Yes, I have a family history of osteoporosis.

My vitamin D level was too high (I had been taking a high-dose supplement for the past year) so I was told to stop taking that. PT levels are being done next week. I have lots of info about diet etc, and am taking Ca, but I was hoping to use this (on the surface) bad news to kick me into doing something good, ie get fitter.

I do struggle with exercise (no particular reason, just lazy) and I will look into Pilates. I bought a very high-end rowing machine a couple of months back, but the day it arrived, before I took it out of the box, I broke my wrist very badly (hence the dexa scan etc). My wrist is not yet strong enough to start using the rowing machine.

I am hoping to motivate myself, with a programme I can follow online for example.
