is this a common side effect?

he has never been ill with 1st and 2nd vacc but this time winced in pain the afternoon after so had to give calpol

Could it be a virus? Has he got sniffles, or temperature. Could it even be the calpol (has he had it much before?)
I think the things to really keep an eye on are temperature, and rashes.
Is he having plenty of wet nappies still?
Keep an eye on it, and don't feel afraid to call docs/go down there if you're worried.
You know your son better than anyone else, and you'll know if he just 'isn't quite himself'.

I'd get some acidophelus into him (pro-biotic) you can get stuff for babies.

You can report potential adverse reactions online. Although there IS a weird diarrhoea almost-not-quite bug doing the rounds (thread on it earlier- ds3 has it- I'll chuck some acidophelus into him as well).
