Bisphosphonates and steroids

I've been taking prednisolone for 18 months and it now looks like it will be a long term thing. My grandmother had horrendous osteoporosis (a potential side effect of steroid use) and my mother also had it.
I've had a baseline bone scan and waiting results but meanwhile the Rheumatologist has asked my GP to prescribe alandronic acid. I had a long discussion about the pros and cons and agreed to take it but I'm really torn between risks v benefits.
I wonder if anyone takes this and what their experience has been?
